Build Up Advice?
OK... Im new to the forums here and I was hoping you guys could give me some advice. I've been planning on starting a new project soon and what I want to do is build up a motor. Ive only ever done rebuilds on Chevy 350's and ive done alot of maintanace on just about anything else. What I want to do is just put a motor on a stand and after about 7 or 8 months of tinkering, put it in a car. I dont really want to spend alot of money on the motor itself so i was originally thinking of rebuilding a gen 2 b16a with alot of performance internals. After doing alot of reading on the b16a and vtech and whatnot ive actually grown slightly afraid of vtech. Dont get me wrong i really want it but im not so sure i really want to be tinkering around too muich with the electronic side of a motor. After alot of thinking ive been leaning toward a gen 2 b18b non vtech. Since its going to be all motor i want to put in most of the following....
- cams
- header
- intake manifold
- bigger throttlebody
- pistons
- valves
- springs and retainers
- do a port and polish
- upgrad all the ignition parts
- and maybe get the head decked while i get the port and polish done
Theres probably going to be alot more things i need but thats just the basics. Is there any advice you guys give me or maybe even suggest a different motor. Im more familiar with volkswagens than hondas so a little help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
eric

What kind of car are you planning on putting this motor into, is the electrical part you talking about having to wire up VTEC in to a non-vtec chasis, cause that is easily fixed, you just have to go to like http://www.hasport.com and buy a wire harness, that will easily fix any problem you might have wiring. VTEC motors prodecue more horsepower but less torque than an non-VTEC motor, there are advantages and disadvantages to both. You also said though too that $$$ is a concern for you, if you want to build a good set up I say build a LS/VTEC motor which is using a block from a non-VTEC Acura so like a B18B block and then get a VTEC head like from a B16 or a B18, if you do a search you will find many people talking about LS/VTEC motors in here. Good luck though with whatever you decide on.
The original plan is to put it into a 88-91 civic hatch but im having a hard time loacating one thats not really rotted. I kinda like the idea of the final product being a built up non vtech and leaving it non vtech but im still thinking about it. What do you think a fairly built up non vtech can throw down?
