I have used both motor oil and Honda MTF. Both work well and I have not had any problems with either. I also used gm synchromesh in a trans that was grinding pretty good. The synchromesh lessened the grinding and the trans was alot smoother.

never use anything other than MTF, I remember when i first started on honda-tech i once asked the same question and was overwhelmed with responses, I tried everything and by the end my tranny was crying, i finally put all my pennies together and went to honda and bought honda MTF and it fixed my crying tranny, I have tried red line, gear oil, 10w30, and well you name it everything else and HONDA MTF

MTF if I have no grind problems.

Penzoil Synchromess if I have a grind issue

Oil if i'm in a pinch, swap with one of the above at a later time.

I use 10w-30 and I have never had a problem. But if you want to spend extra money go with the MTF.

The helms actually specifies Honda MTF or 10w-30 motor oil.

In the 7 years I have been modding hondas I have used:

honda mtf - I had o.k. luck with this but made most of my friends cars here go from bad to really really bad. One was bad enough to grind in EVERY gear.

GM syncromesh - total **** and a complete waste of money

redline - will toast most trannies from hondas to chevies in a month or less

10w-30 - good on pre 93 trannies

10-40w second best in my book

1 part 30w non detergent, 2 parts 10w30 beats anything out there by 1000%
Cured the mtf every gear grind, and every other bad fluid malfunction.

The older trannies were MADE for motor oil. Not synthetic oil. The synthetics work great the first couple of days then they thin out and start to grind. Remeber the syncros use the oil to spin the next gear. WHen the oils get too thin they cannot spin the gear and the syncros will start to grind.

People add these cure all fluids, and yes they work GREAT for a few hundred miles then the trannies go bad from the thin oil. It doesn't matter how good it feels the first couple hundred miles it matters how it feels after that. Just because it feels great when you add fluid it doesn't mean it is making the tranny better.

The mix I stated above is the best mix you can get. If you do not beleive me try it out. It might feel the same the first couple days as it did before but then it will get better and better. Wouldn't you wanna have your tranny be the same then get better and better, rather than great for 2 days then worse and worse and worse?

Weather you beleive me that this works or not doesn't really matter to me. I know it does I know of 12 cars here in town running it right now, and many of those owners are on their 2nd to 3rd car that have used it on all of them, plus the swaps and clutch and tranny swaps, we have tested this well over 50 times and have had no other fluid do even as good let alone better. Plus the cost is well under half of mtf and syncrcrap.

I use Gm Synchromesh Friction Modified Fluid (about 1.8 qrts). You can use MTF but I dont see any reason why not to use 10w30 like the helms manual suggests. I am guessing they use the 10w30 for when your swapping out the engines.

Anywho, you should be changing your transmission fluid every time you do a full maintenance tune up.

The GM stuff really did help out my 3rd gear grind. It has been fine ever since and i have had it in there for about 7-10k miles.

Non detergent 30w? Does that just mean not multi-weight like the 10w-30?

Either way, i might try your lil mix since my tranny fluid should be changed right about now.

I have heard good things about Syncromesh if having grinds. I was going to try it because my 3rd gear grinds every once and a while (maybe 1 out of 50 shifts and when I'm on it). Maybe I would try that mix if I knew what 'non detergent' oil was. Anyone else used this formula?

MTF
10/40 is what we used to recommend on the old skool Honda transmissions

coastal and valvoline make a 30 w non detergant. Our walmart has the coastal and autozone has the valvoline. It is just that non-detergant 30w oil. It will say it right on the label. Everyone I know using it mixes it with the 10-30w, I actually use 10w-40 in either pep boys oil or quaker state (which I hear is the same brand).

Non-detergant oil is what places like endyn and other motor builders reccomend you break your motor in with. It is not too hard to find, it is in the oil section with the cheaper oils.

i have run 10w30, Syncromesh and Honda MTF and the MTF wins hands down my trannys have always shifted silky smooth with Honda MTF and it only grinds if i **** up shifting. I'm currentally rebuilding my tranny becasue my diff exploded and i'm soaking all the parts in honda MTF before i put it back together so everything is already lubed up with the stuff
