im thinking about swapping my Si tranny for DX
i think im getting old. i dont like hearing my engine. i want better mileage (30mpg is good, but it can always be better...) i dont care about speed so much. as long as the car handles well and is somewhat comfortable.
so, anyone have any experience swapping between the two transmissions? yes, i know the only difference is the final drive. thats the point. easier than finding an HF 5th gear and just replacing that.

Why not just let me drive you car, you drive mine; and we'll switch ;p*edit-I ment trans, not cars*. That way I get an Si and you get a Dx trans and everyones happy. It would probably be more cost effective to simply replace the entire trans ands ell the Si to make up the difference. You can swap any D series cable tranny form 88-91 with NO trouble, aside from matching the right flywheel and clutch to trans. I'm sure you could find an HF trans here in cali for free if you just check the classifieds. - Darrell

Same here, I was getting 37mpg @ 80mph with the AC on.
You probably won't notice a considerable gain in fuel economy between the SI and DX transmissions either.
5th gears are not that hard to change but the leap from 4th in the SI to 5th in the HF is drastic, you'd have to rev all the way to 7grand before you shifted into 5th.
Have you done a tune up and checked your tire pressure and wheel bearings lately?

i have actually gone from si to dx back to si, and now i'm feeling the same way you are. i don't like the 4k rpm's on the freeway. i want better gas mileage and all that. basically, the amount of time i do regular driving way outweighs the needs for the si tranny imo.

One thing you guys gotta realize. The hf tranny is very touchy. Too much power and the input bearing goes out. Trust me, that's why I swapped. The internals on the two tranny's are different. If you do the swap down, be gentle on it.

Tyson (or anyone else), what are your RPMs at with the Si tranny at say, 70 and 80 mph?
When I had my D series, I thought I had a DX tranny but the rpm's seemed way too high on the freeway (although nowhere near as high as my ys1!). I just want to know if I have an Si tranny sitting back at my parents house or not

these are all in 5th gear: rpms are roughly
60 = 3000
70mph = 3500rpm
80 = 4000
100 = 5000
140 = 7000 (that's as high as i could tell ya)
so theoretically, if you could rev a d-series motor to 9k, you could hit 180mph with the SI tranny (assuming there was no such thing as friction, drag coefficient, aerodynamics or any of that b.s. of course)
