6.5s too big?... yes, I searched

Then when I attempted to install them I noticed that they were considerably larger than the stock units. It seems as if it would still be possible to mount them, but it would mean new holes and a frame that covers the stock speaker grill mounting holes. I measured the stock units and it seems that they are a lil larger than 6". Anyone know what size speakers I REALLY need to go purchase this time. Brand recommendations would also be appreciated. Thanks.</TD></TR></TABLE> Your Civic takes a standard 6.5" slim line speaker, just under 2" deep.
Some of the speakers that they now call 6.5" are not standard 6.5" they are bigger, and deeper, even most aftermarket standard 6.5" are deeper then 2" and I know of no 6.5" component speaker that has a depth of 2" or less, 2.75" is the "slimest" I have seen.
There are a number of things you can do, the easiest would be to take the stock speaker around to the local car audio shops and find something that will fit, if the speakers that you have are only too deep, not also too big, [mounting hole] you canget a little more depth by cutting out the back of the oem speaker mounting basket, and even more depth reduction by adding a spacer between the speaker and the oem speaker mounting basket, [ a thick gasket made out of MDF] if on the other hand the speaker is an oversized 6.5" the best thing you can do is make your own custom MDF speaker mounts, [lots of work, but the speakers willsound great] I have Eclipse 2ways in my 94 teg over 6 years now and although I have custom MDF mounts, they did fit the stock mounts, [first year i had them] without mods. http://www.eclipse-web.com Alpine also makes a speaker that comes with a spacer that will fit, http://www.alpine.com, and so does Pioneer http://www.pioneerelectronics.com and there are probably more.

thanks for the feedback. I'm not too concerned with the depth because I didn't get anything with ridiculously large magnets. I was just wondering why I seemed to have the only civic that came without 6.5" speakers. I measured the stock units and they came to 6" total frame diameter. My girlfriend has some aftermarket speakers in her car that she had installed when she originally purchased the car in 99 so I just checked those out. They fit perfectly in the factory mounting locations so I measured those and they came out to about a 6" frame or 5 1/4" actual speaker area.
So, moral of the story... I'm just gonna return the ones I originally purchased and get some 5 1/4"...
I just can't figure out why everyone else on these boards swears that it's a 6.5" I must just have an ultra rare care, huh.

</TD></TR></TABLE> Although a 5.25" speaker will fit, and your plastic speaker mounts may even have the 4 speaker mounting holes in them, its alwas better to installas big a speaker as you can.
If the speaker is round like your oem one it's a STANDARD 6.5", if it's square shaped with 4 mounting holes its a 5.25" speaker.
For some reason I don't understand, some years back speaker manufactures started to make an oversized 6.5" speaker. For over 30 years standard speakers for cars were 3.5" round GM and Ford some Chry., 4x6" rectangle GM, 4" square mostly imports, 5.25 square Chry. and some imports, 6.5" round Ford, Mazda, Honda and Acura, 5x7" oval/rectangle Chry, 6x8" oval/rectangle Ford, and 6x9" oval/rectangle GM, Ford, Chry., Honda/Acura. All but the 6.5" have stayed the same general size and shape or I should say they have added the New 6.5" because you can still get the STANDARD 6.5".
