Default my CRX...

hi, i own an 87 Honda CRX. i bought it then found out that the engine sucks... so i was wondering the only way i can make this a sleeper car is to do an engine swap. so what should i swap for and how much will it be (estimate.) i looked into a B20 - CRV, would that be good or am i wasting my time?

stuffing in a B is alot of work and tight fit a DOHC ZC will make that thing rip also if I remember right a cheap used d16y8 could fit in and let her rip.

Swapping on 1st gen rexs is alot of work. search and you shall learn much.

well, your generation had a totally different set of mounts than later d series. it shared the mounts with the first gen integra, however.

you could swap in the d16a1 out of the integra, which is like a zc. this would be the easiest, but still hard if you don't have an si, because only the si's had fuel injection.

you'd have to rewire and replumb if you wanted fuel injection.

visit redpepperracing.com, they'll tell you what you need to know.

a b16 will go in, but it needs special mounts that only hasport makes.

Best? They are all good engines. The decision really depends on how fat your wallet is.

The d16a1 would be the easiest.

Do you have an SI?

you can do 250 on a zc w/ a turbo... motors about $530 (hmotorsonline.com), mounts i dont know a price on... but yeh, you'll have to do some rewiring i'm pretty sure... but thats the best/easiest/cheapest way to go i do believe... that and everyone and their DOG does a B-series swap... stick d-series, you can get some good kick out of em if you build em right and add the right options (ie t3/t4 turbo setup :D) and their cheap

zc motors seem to put out about 150hp. and B16 about 160-170. B16 is very difficult to get in tho?

Also, i think that an 88 or 89 integra dohc is stock for those cars? do they fit the same motor mounts as my car. and how many horses could i get outta one of them?

go with the ZC man. Its the easiest swap for your application. Plain and simple!!!

zc motors only put out about 135-140 hp but i think that would be an easier swap than any of the other ideas that were mentioned...plus a y8 is a hydro tranny if i am correct and that year crx is cable.

the zc WILL NOT fit in without a lot of fabrication, but its the integras that have an engine VERY CLOSE to the zc, the d16a1, that will bolt right in.

but you need a lot of rewiring to do it.

also, if you buy special mounts, you can put a b series in there, the wiring's about the same, since you have to start FROM SCRATCH anyway.

i think your goal of 250 horses is completely unrealistic.

there's not much room to run f/i, etc. plus the EW chassis is pretty weak.

how much money do you have? what i'm planning on doing is just routing the whole trimmed down chassis harness into an ew, that will solve the wiring problem. now you have a problem with fuel delivery, some people say the fuel lines are fine, but if honda made them bigger on the fuel injection ones, just run bigger lines. etc, etc.

just visit redpepperracing, browse around. we can't tell you what engine's better for your needs. you need to be independent and research for yourself.

so the DOHC ZC is allot of work from what i hear.
so i think u r right that if im gunna have to do it from scratch i should just do a Btype. however with me and my brother and his friend iam sure we could do anything. however it might just be easier to just swap an integra D16A1 in. it would be easiest i think. but what kinda numbers would that spit out?

you can use any d-series tranny with a d-series motor so a y8 will mount up to his stock tranny or he could use a 88-91 si tranny if he wanted

I am in the same postion that you are but after doing a lot of research I think that the B18C would be the best engine. It's light, good torque, and it accepts mods well.
