Default Speedometer Doesnt Work??? HELP, Please!!!

Hey guys, i finally got my Sohc ZC block/Z6 head (minime) working perfectly. But somehow my speedometer does not work. I am using the CX wiring harness so that means im also using the CX VSS. Vtec is wired correctly too as well as the 4-wire O2 sensor. I also have no check engine lights. Any clue as to what i should check? thanks!

What does the VSS look like? Cause i just filled up my tranny fluid yesterday, and the plug was like a metal bronze color plub with a lil pin(sphere shape) on the end.

NM, thats not the VSS...............

The VSS sits in the top of the tranny and has a gear on the end of it. You can remove it to fill the tranny if you really want. Look on the back passenger side of the transmission. On a D series it's held in by a single bolt with a 10 or 12mm head on it.

dont tighten that bolt too much or it will strip, and they strip pretty easy

ok it still does not work. here's all the info:

I have a CX hatch with the CX wiring harness. I am using a SI hatch tranny, and it initially had a different plug harness than the CX so i switched it for a CX VSS sensor plug. still doesnt work. today, i went to the junkyard and grabed another VSS from a hatch, and put that in, and the VSS does not work. I have checked the fuse and it is now blown. My heat/fuel guage works, so im hoping my speedometer guage is also in good working order. Oh and this is also my second cluster. the first one didnt work, and the second one, the guy who had it said the speedometer didnt work for him, but thats because his VSS was damaged or something, so it would occasionally work for him.

Is there anything else i can check, before i attempt to see if my bro's EX cluster will work in my car (only reason i havent done it yet, is because i dont want to damage his plastic trim)??? thanks!!!

Swap for the EX cluster and see if it works. If not, it's still the VSS.

What he said. Does your car have cruise control? Because you can find out if the cruise is good by setting the cruise and seeing if the car drives at the same speed. If it does than its not the VSS. It would probably end up being your cluster or wires running from the VSS to the cluster.

I was just looking at mine today. After a little over a year of not having a speedo it gets old. Mine works sometimes, usually when the weather is really nice. 75+ degrees outside and no rain. Only time it ever considers working.

Does yours work every once in awhile? I'm working on buying a new cluster and I want to go to a junk yard and buy all the wires that come out of the VSS to re-run them.

I wonder if there's a way to see if the VSS is good and to check for a short in the wires. Anyone know how I could do that? Could I plug a volt meter into the wire slots on the VSS? How could you test a cluster and check for shorts in the wires?

but i dont think a bad fuse would cause the Speedo to work on and off...or would it? Mine is like, every time it'll hit a bump, the needle would jump up and then work...then hit another bump and it'll shut off...weird eh?

Sounds like a loose connection to me. I would check your wiring for anything loose or worn out. Sounds like everything else still works (when it wants too).

Now you can drive really, really fast and when you get pulled, have a mechanic write out that your speedo was broke and use it as an excuse in court. So when that cop stops you for doing 110 mph through the mall parking lot, there you go...

I checked all my connections and I couldn't find anything loose. Like everything is tight and all the wires are in the right places.

yea i checked my fuses, the wiring to the VSS looks fine. The cluster also looks fine. iono whats wrong, i just need to find another cluster that for sure works, and put that in to see if its the cluster. maybe i'll go out to the junkyard tomorrow and buy one and see if thats the problem. shitty thing is the junkyard charges $50 for damn DX clusters

but yea mike, my bro doesnt want to touch his cluster at all, he's scared to break it himself.

I've taken my Ex cluster out and apart like 5 times. Never broke a thing. Tell your bro to stop being a baby and just don't force anything and you're good to go.
