Where to Mount Balast and How?
As its says, since the GSR is too heavy in ITS I will need to add some weight. Can anyone please post some pics of how and where they have added the weight? Obviously it needs to go in the passenger floor boards. I would assume that it should go as far back as possible? Any opinions here? This is one of the last items to do!
Secondly, what are you using for weight? Old weights off a barbell? Lead?

I would really read the GCR on this and maybe poke around the improved touring web site. I remember a bimmerworld bmw getting into a big stink with the stewards on the location of ballast a few years back at the ARRC and I believe an appeal was maybe taken on it. Can't remember a lot about it. I remember looking at the car and the ballast was farther back than the other cars. Sorry I can't be more specific.

i can see something like that happening, if the rules read "balasit must be placed in the passanger floor board" then in my eyes any place on the "passanger" side of the car would be fine. If it read "balast must be placed in passanger foot well" then you could put it were the back seat "passanger" foot well is.
Thats up to you to check out the rules.
simplist place would seem to me to be to use the front passanger seat mounting locations and fab up a bracket and bolt the weight on to the mounting braket

Where - Dude, read the friggin rulebook. Its in there.
What - Walmart sells some pretty good barbell stuff in 10, 20, and 50lb chunks.
How - Use some common sense. Big fat bolts and big washers. Minimum requirements are <drumroll> in the rulebook.

Geez Scott, I sense a bit of hostility in that response!
Where - I have read the rulebook. My question perhaps was to generic. Is it better to be forward or backward? Left or right? Does it make any noticable difference? I have not corner weighted the car yet, but my gut would be the the right and back as far as possible in the passenger side floor pan.
How - Is it best to make a plate with some large bolts welded on it? Should it go through the floor, again I know the minimums I am looking for experiences and what works best!

Scott hit the nail on the head with getting weights at Walmart. I just had to do this last weekend, went into Walmart and bought two 25-lb free weights, stopped at Home Depot and got two 4-inch grade 8 bolts with washers and lock nuts and a backing plate for the floor.
The shittiest part is drilling holes in the weights, since the GCR says you need two bolts. It takes for ever with an electric drill and a 1/2" bit, but it works. After drilling the holes in the weights, I cut the backing plates, one for under the car and one for above the weights to tie it together. Drill your holes for that and then line everything up/test fit in the passenger footwell, and drill through the floor.
I chose to put them in front of the seat rail and furthest to the middle of the car(left side of the footwell) because it brings the weight to the middle and it is held in better by the under-carraige with the plate. There is probably a better way to do this, but it was easier and quicker then anything else I could think of and it is done to the rulebook. Ill try and get some pics up in a day or so, so you can see how it was done.
Do you know how much weight you need to add? If you havent gotten it corner-weighted, how would you know how much you need to add? Remember when you get it weighed to do it with barely any fuel in the car, so your not using fuel as ballast (like BAR-Honda, lol).

ITCS-17 has the details. I think there was a few updates to the rules about amount of balast and stuff in some recent fast tracks.
Don't worry about getting ragged by these guys ... Improved Vintage rules are not easy to keep up with.
yea yea ... we need 500 pages of fast tracks each month to update our 10000 page rulebook.

GS-R guys, the GCR specifies that you shall place ballast in the _front_ passenger footwell in any location aft of the firewall and fore of the front seat location. It also states that you must fasten it (doesn't say you must drill through it*) w/ 2 1/2" grade 5 or better bolts that must be reinforced w/ washers that will distribute the load. It ALSO says that you may reinforce the floorpan for this purpose. If I were you guys a.) I would not be whining about the wieght of the car
but more importantly b.) since the car would be light, I'd heavily reinforce the floor pan per the stipulation in the GCR (nice place for that weight) and then add my ballast as opposite my body as possible (figure its going to be w/in the wheelbase no matter what so why not put it outside and to the back of that _front_ passenger footwell).
* If I were using round free weights I'd rather mount a post for them to slip over and fashion a thick 2" wide bracket from flat stock that had a hole for the post and then mounted on each side of the weights w/ grade 5-8-10.9-whatever bolts. That way, if I needed to add 10#, I wouldn't have to drill through a 10# weight, just unbolt, drop it on the stack and rebolt.

hi guys.
this relates not just to SCCA, but to all other groups too; i was wondering, if one wanted to put weight back in the car (legally), and one wanted to put the weight in the rear of the car, could one not bolt the spare tire and jack assy back into the car (i guess i'd use the stock mounts, plus some extra bolts down thru the wheel lug holes for "extra safety"?
just a question?

Todd - yes. I know several ITS 944s that run the spare in the rear mount. As long as it's bolted down, I don't recall anything against it.
You can run the spare tire, jack, and such. Just make sure its bolted down well.
You can also put the passenger seat in the car, which puts the weight a bit farther back than the passenger foot well.

I thought the GCR called for the weight being any where between the firewall and the REAR mounts for the passenger seat. i.e. you could put it under the passenger seat.
