It can vary from state to state. Check with your local DMV to see what exactly it is in your state, some states will not let you rebuild a salvage title. Actually 98 was the first year of fuel injection on the 750 but whos counting
On a side note, in many states you have to repair the damage, go the the highway patrol or dmv office and have a safety inspection performed. You do not have to have mint cosmetics on the bike to have this inspection, but it must have all lights functional, all levers/controls must operate, and there cant be any cracks/breaks or jerry rigged frame fixes. They have to determine that the bike is structurally sound and is safe to be put back on the road. There is a ~200 dollar fee to get the title changed, and it will be brandished for the rest of its life. (READ: When you go to sell it, you will only be able to get half of what it's worth because it has been claimed a total loss already)
Also many insurance companies will not give you a policy on a previously totalled bike because if they have to pay a claim, they have to restore it to fair market value and that is difficult to do on a vehicle that was written off as a total loss already.
Just some things to look into. I know of a 98 gixxer 750 that hasnt been wrecked and is in sweeeeeeeeeeet condition for only 1600 more.
