Default F3 stalling ... Alittle assistance

One of my buddies just bought a 97 F3 and noticed that once and awhile it will act like it is not getting gas and stall out. They seemed to be at random moments in time so there is nothing to link them to so I was wondering what would be the first order of business to check.

I planned on trying to take a look at the simple objects of oil, spark plugs, air filter but relatively how hard are the carbs to get at to check how dirty they are?

Thanks alot for your help before hand.

Oh yeah I did a search but came up with nothing but if there is another topic about that please post me the link and send me on my way!!

If it hasnt been done for a while clean the plugs. (If you have the little sandblaster spark plug cleaner use it, otherwise buy new plugs.)

IF the bike had been sitting any length of time this is the first thing you want to do. Also if the gas had been sitting for a long time it would run like crap so drain it and put fresh in. My f3 had been sitting for several months and I cleaned the carbs, put fresh gas and it ran like crap and would hardly stay running. Cleaning the plugs with the sandblaster style plug cleaner was the only thing that would get it running right again.

I would have replaced the plugs but nobody had em in stock and it would take a week to get here.

The manual has a detailed procedure to test the fuel pump to verify that it is pumping gas. Also check the fuel line going to the carbs to make sure it is not pinched off. If it is starving for gas it will run like crap as well.

Be careful when cleaning the carbs. The floats can sometimes stick and it makes for a mess . Be careful what you use to clean the jets etc out. If you scratch the main/slow jets it may not run right either.

Thanks alot for your help.

It has been running before and it also is a new batch of gas. I think we are going to try and change the plugs and also check the fuel lines for pinches. He is getting a new rear tire put on by a local shop so he will ask them then to check out the carbs so we don't have to put up with your "mess" with the floats sticking.

Sounds good, more than likely it is either the plugs or the fuel line. The carbs arent too bad if you have the proper tools. I just recently had a float sticking and it was pouring gas into the engine when the bike wasn't running and flooding the engine. The work of taking the carbs off/on the bike 2-3 times is alot more work than actually rebuilding the carbs in the first place in which I did. If you dont already have it, look over on cbrworld.net for the honda users manual. It has anything you could need for that bike.
