Rod Knock, need help please!!
i have a 93' vtec with 166,xxx miles and i just moved to arizona from san diego in january. about a month and a half ago i starting hearing a wierd noise and i came to the conlcusion that it is a rod knock. i run synthetic blend 10w-30 oil.
heres were i need your guys' help...the rod knock only shows up when the outside air is pretty warm, and i drive 20 miles to work everyday. so what i'm thinking is that maybe since its so hot that the oil is thinning out sooo much that it is causeing the rod to knock. heres my question, would switching to a thicker oil help my problem for a few months while i try to find a new h22. i was thinking going with regular oil 15W-40??

in normal driving, your oil temp shouldn't be getting so hot that its not an effective lubricant.
you can try a castrol 10w-40, but I don't think thats going to help any.

yeah man i dont think ur getting rod knock and putting thicker oil in it isnt gunna help any if it does its only a matter of time before it blows. Check ur oil for metal shavings. does the car have any loss of power when its doing this. i would also reajust the valve lash because it will get kinda loud if its way out of wack.
a rod knock is the only thing i could come up with....my valves already need to be adjusted, i can hear those everyday, but this noise only comes and goes, it's wierd. it usually comes up when i'm driving home from work (20 miles on the freeway) and the ambient temperature is 100+ degrees here in arizona now. the noise is hard to explain, its a deeper noise than the valve ticks are and it only sounds like it is coming from the #1 or maybe the #2 cylinder in the block....hopefully i should be getting a h22A long block next month if everything goes through right!! but this is my only car right now and i dont need the motor to blow up at this moment...it sucks being working and being a full time student with only one means of transportation
[sarcasm] try some motor honey [/sarcasm]
i have rod knock also, but i hear it all the time between 2k-3k rpms
i dont think rod knock is one of those things that comes and goes

i know rod knock is something that doesn't come and go, but this does only when i drive home from work (110+ degrees here in arizona now). but when i drive at night anywhere for any distance it doesn't make it. it's only in the hot weather when it makes the noise...i know its not the valves because they already need to be adjusted. this is a new noise on top of that and when i hit the gas the sound goes faster with the speed of the engine and i'm 90% sure its coming from the block
I had a rod knocking for a couple of weeks, til it finally gave out. I tore into it yesterday and found a spun bearing. Start the car and take a plug wire off one at a time and see if the noise changes. Mine changed on the number 3 cylinder and that's where I found the spun bearing.

i don't have a h-series... ihave a zc but i have a similar problem.... my local honda god looked at my car and said i need to get my valves adjusted and my rockers tighted.... i have a heavier knock noise around 2.5k - 3.5k which sounds similar to your issue.... he said a true rod knock would have a heavy tap from just abouve idle all the way though the powerband so ur situation doesn't seem to lead to rod knock
buddy up to a local honda tech and see if he will flow you some ideas..
or when experiencing the knock noise pull over and pop the hood, rev the car up manually via the throttle at the throttle body and listen to hear if the noise is comin from the block or the head....
i know the traffic and heat are reasons to keep away from this one but it might save you from the worries of not havin a car good luck

def. an lma issue, they will come and go as they please sometimes, ive heard a few b16's and h22's make some crazy noises from the lma's when they get worn, so check them out-
That just does not sound like rod knock. I had rod knock in my supra before i spun a bearing. It was pretty constant knocking. I really think you have other issues with your car...maybe (as mentioned before) piston slap.
