I always strip it completely with aircraft stripper. followed by sanding usually no smoother than 600 or so. Ive used self etching primer on it before but not this time. One thing I noticed is that a good self etching primer actually does just that, it etches itself into the metal. It also is harder to remove the next time if you are like me and like change frequently. After that just several thin coats of paint. The gold is a high temp, which isnt really needed but it had the color I wanted. The black and silver are just model paint, usaully I just sand the paint off the letters to show the metal below. Ill post some pics of my old b16, and my gfs b16 cover.
Thats my old radiator, thats the only way I could get it to clear the hood without completely cutting the bottom of the core support.
