powder coating?
hey guys, i know this isnt really the place for this, i know that, but i wanted to throw this out there because most of the other places i'd post this would garner a lot of useless answers, and usually in here people are more informative.
Regardless, if i wanted to get a new finish on my wheels how could i go about doing that? A friend of mine mentioned powdercoating, and that would of course change the color to a flat paint color right? What if i wanted to change them from hyperblack to bronze, is that possible? Well i just wanted to ask, and if anyone can let me know how much that usually costs, thankyou.

Honestly painting them will be cheaper and probably more rewarding but long term powdercoating will last longer but will cost more.
If you choose to do a diy approach here is what I suggest:
1. Remove wheels from vehicle and prep the wheels with aircraft stripper (if already painted and to remove OEM clearcoat), or sand down wheels with 500-800 grip paper to roughen the edges.
2. Rinse wheels off and allow to dry completely.
3. Take some index cards and put them in between the tires and the wheel.
4. Mask off anything you don't want painted and apply a color appropriate primer.
5. Spray light coats of wheel paint on wheels, allowing each coat to dry before applying another coat. I would recommend 3-5 light coats.
6. For a flat look you can just add a 1-2 coats of clear coat to 'seal' the wheels.
7. For a shiny look I would add 7-8 coats of clear coat and you can wet sand them with a high grit sandpaper (2000 grit) and apply another final clear coat on top of that.
For powdercoating you would need to take it to a shop to get it professionally done, be prepared to pay around 75-100 a wheel; at least that is how much it costs here.

Sure I don't see why not. But why paint steelies unless it was back to black.

....only thing I wouldn't do is add clear coat to them because you wouldn't want them shiny
.
edit: if they are rusty you may want to get out a steel brush or something and get that rust off...then seal it up with primer and paint

Hyperblack is a hard color to recreate since it's very shiney (chrome) mixed with a darker color....you might be able to find some paint like that but it would take a lot of clearcoat and some wetsanding...worst case if you can't duplicate the finish you can paint the wheels a different color like gunmetal for example.

true, i would like to have it look almost the same as it did when i bought them, i have the opportunity to get it done so i might as well. I have to actually find out about the wheels tomorrow. If its a go or not, they might not need re-finishing at all, so lets wait and see!

just a drive by from an ef guy,
but powdercoat can be flat or gloss, just like paint. it is much more durable, which is why it is the choice for professional jobs on wheels, suspension parts, motorcycle frames, or anything else that gets alot of abuse. a good shop- many can be found in jersey near you or on long island- will charge between 35 and 60 a wheel. you will need to unmount your tires, and the price will include sandblasting, powdercoating, and curing. if you want to do it right, powdercoat is your answer.
i don't know the names of places in jersey, but i know quite a few in the nyc, li, albany area. if you wanted i could also ask some jersey friends where they got their work done.

Hey there, thanks for the info buddy, everyone has provided such excellent information. I am willing to get the rims professionaly redone if it costs me between 35-60 per wheel. I would highly appreciate it if you could get in contact with people you know, i am a true dunce when it comes to such things. Again, thankyou.

If you can get it done for 35-60 bucks a wheel I totally say powdercoat it, it will last longer and look tons better. I checked a couple places around here and they quoted me around 120 a wheel

Damn thats a rip off. I paid either 90 or 110 of all 4 wheels and all 4 strut bars. If you lived in AZ I could tell you of a great place. Also I found out that when you powder coat your wheels the radar detector can catch you speed, just if you wanted to know.

What im wondering is this. What kinds of finishes can i get if i get them powdercoated. Do you think Bronze is a possibility?

The wheels, well, they were on my car for a while, but i didnt drive the car with them on for more than say 1000 miles. So as the car sat, and because of the moisture out here in NJ, the lugs, tuner style, inverted joints, managed to start getting rusty, and as they got rusty i guess they expanded and just got so tight in the lug hole that they wouldnt budge.
So, when i took it to Stage 2 performance, they managed to get 3 wheels off with no damage, but one wheel was just impossible to get off. Unfortunately they had to use some sort of laser cutter or something and completely cut the wheel apart. The wheels are gone, but if they ruined the tires too, there will be hell to pay, they are practically brand new.
So, i wanted to powdercoat them if they didnt destroy them, that way if they did any damage i could get the wheel sanded down and refinished. So, now they had to cut the wheel, its gone. A friend of mine told me that there might be a place that could fix it but **** that, im not spending the money, those wheels are a 650 dollar loss for me, because i had a friend of mine lined up to buy them...kinda depressing!
this is the link for the image of the wheel on my car.

Now they are gone for good.
