Default Valve Train Adjustment

According to Honda the valvetrain is suppose to be adjusted every 30 thousand miles . Well I have hit the 30 thousand mile mark . I have a 2000 EX , regular stock SOHC VTEC D16Y8 I believe (if this helps any ) What is needed to do a valve adjustment ? Any special tools ? Is it pretty much straight forward and fairly managable to perform ? How long will it take ? Any help would be appreciated .

I've adjusted valve tappetes before, if that's what you're talking about.

Well if that then you should probably buy a manual because it's in there, but to spare you...*this is for a D16Z6 so I'm not sure if it's exactly the same*
Take your spark plug wires off you plugs, then take your vavle cover off. Then you'll have to find out the firing order and which cylinder is which. Move Cylinder one to top dead center. Above the cam will be an assembly that will have the tappets on them. They are small nuts (5/16? not sure) with a screw that is threaded in the nut. Loosen the nut and you should be able to turn the screw. Now using a gapper tighten the tappets to the specified thickness in between according to the manual. I'm not sure what the thickness' are, but just make sure you do the intake and exhaust. There's 16 in all (get it 16 valve). Does anyone else know what the size of the gaps should be?? You might want to ask around for the information if you don't feel like buying a manual. That's about all i know, but If you have anymore ?'s feel free.

Thanks that has shed some light on it . I rather find out how to do it then take it to the service department . They quoted me about 378 to 400 dollars for the 30 thousand service and I ain't feeling like paying that . I paid for the car thats all I am gonna pay for LOL . Well maybe some headers and a few other things but Honda don't need to know LOL

It should only take you about 1-2 hours depending on how picky you are. Just pay attention to the gaps, because the feeler guage is a little trick with oil on it. You really can't feel how tight it is so make sure you can feel a some drag, but not to where you have to yank on it to pull the guage out. But definetly buy a good manual so you don't have to struggle with finding all the specifics.

ok after having the search button pointed out to me once again . I did the search and found nothing but posts on Integra and Type R motors . The procedure is pretty much cut and dry . From what I have gathered getting the special 10 mm tool will help but you can still do the job with a socket and a screw driver . As for the feeler gauges I know where to get them , But the key part I am missing from all this research is , What are the specs for the Intake and exhaust . Anyone have the specs on a D16Y8 SOHC VTEC ? ? ?

I agree, I'm tired of hearing "use the search "
Most of the time you get nothing...

A wrench will allow you to tighten the adjuster while holding it in place with the screw driver. A socket will not.

As for the specs you're looking for, read the label on the underside of your hood. The owner's manual also contains a lot of usefull information about your car.

Thanks perfectionist , I didn't know about the specs being labeled on the car . In my opinion as much as it might sound anti honda . I still think they keep info back so you have to bring the damn things in for service . Thanks again

valve adjustments is probably the most difficult part of a tune up..for $90 bucks i have have the guys at speedie oil change do it..they have the manuals, specs..all that poo poo..u can do the rest of the 30k stuff urself if ur up to it..oil change, plugs, distributor cap, tranny fluid change, coolant flush *but not necessary till after 60k*..or take advantage of those discount coupons and have the service done over a 1 month period
