Turbo Installed Today, Smoking, Plz Help.
Ok so the whole setup was put in today and she runs and all but she seems to be smoking fairly bad. I think the smoke is a whitish grey maybe a little blue? I checked the oil levels and it at normal level. The system is running without a cat at the moment and with FMU, i know not the best but its for low boost. Still I don't think it should be spewing smoke like this. Turbo still spools and and I get boost and all, just lots of smoke.
are we talking a lot or small amounts..if its cold out the car will have white condensation vapor coming out that could be mistaken for "white smoke"
no its not condensation smoke, its actually quite a bit of smoke, sometimes it will even puff enough smoke that it blows and I can see it all over the place.
some guys over on HMT were replying saying that it is the seals in the turbo are shot. Is there any way to know which one?
I need her on the road to get to work daily and if I have to put the stock exhaust manifold and remove the turbo for hte time being i shall.

does it smoke all the time or just under boost> if under boost only its the headgasket.... if it smokes all the time its the turbo seals.

yes, the seals are replaceable.
contact ken @ phoenix turbo. a rebuild generally goes for 250 through him, including cleaning, new bearings, seals, balancing etc

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhck so i'm guessing I should throw all the stock stuff back on now till it gets sorted out.
Is there a way to find out if its seals for sure sure? Don't wanna take it all out and still have her smoking.

pull the charge pipe off of the turbo and check for oil and pull the dp off and look for oil in the turbine housing and downpipe
now I gotta see how much BS i'm gonna have to go through. Countdown to see if I got screwed. aaarrrrg

yeah I went out to check the oil lines and such tonight. Stainless oil lines, didn't seem to have any problems with them.

im having the same problem...its funny every1 says its a headgasket issue, but its usually not. My issue isnt that it has kinks in the oil line either, but i think the problem is my return line as a little loop that goes against gravity just slightly. Either that or to much oil is being pumped into the turbo. I thought it was bad seals for my turbo to, i got it rebuilt and it helped a little but its still there. First make sure the return line is perfect not going against gravity at all. THen maybe run some test to see if u got a headgasket problem which i doubt it is. At least do those 2 things before rebuilding your turbo.
I got my turbo put on last week and one thing they told me was that the turbo they were going to put on had shaft play. And they said if you have shaft play that I would get smoke. Maybe check this. That could be a factor along with the lines and seal into the turbo.
What size feed line are you using and also what return line? Do you have pics you can post?
I recommend a 3AN I ran a 4AN first, but had an over pressured turbo problem. So I switched to a 3AN but found out that my turbo seals had been messed up from over pressured 4AN line.
hope this helps
This seems to be a common problem with turbo guys ...

the turbo didn't have shaft play when we checked it before it went in. The lines i'm not sure which size they are i'll hae to double check, they are stainless steel braided liines.
I can get pics as its just outside, what would you like the pic to be more concentrated on?

the oil return, the places where the oil lines are run into the turbo, the compressor inlet, around the exterior of the turbo, generally if the seals are blown, a little oil will leak out of the turbo while it is sitting

definintly get some good pics of the return line. That could be your problem if its not angled right or has kinks.

it seems that the smoke may be caused by the valvecover ventilation connected to the charge piping. i have been told that there is a lot of oil being sucked up from there. hopefully this will get solved...if not we put another snail on there...no biggy.
