Default Tranny fluid change or flush??

Hey everyone,

I wanted to know if everyone either have their tranny fluid changed or flushed?
When I brought my car to my dealership to get it flushed, they told me they don't do flushes anymore because it can cause more damage to the Honda transmissions. Appararently Honda trannys have a filter and if they did a flush, it would take out all the filaments that protects the tranny. A letter was sent to all Acura dealerships from Honda Canada to stop performing a full flush. So they got rid of the machine that performs the flush.
I called a tranny shop and they said Acura was full of it and that they didn't have the machine to do the flush and that they were lazy. They said the only way to competely clean out the old fluid is the flush everything out as oppose to drain half of it out. That makes sense. But who is telling the truth? Help!

So, what Acura told me was true? I did call 3 Acura dealerships and they told me the same thing.

I have an automatic, so that's a no go. Plus, I don't want to be messing around with my tranny.

If the tranny flush you're talking about is via machine (ie. T-Tech), then I'd recommend against it. Reason being, that you can't drop the pan and change the filter on Honda/Acura auto trannies. As a result, these flush machines will often cause large particles to become loose and cause damage.

Your best bet is to get a "triple flush" done. Basically, this is just 3 drain and refills of ATF, with some driving done between each change. This method will replace a large percentage of the ATF, without risk to the tranny.

Yes, I would recommend this as well. And if anyone is interested in 'flushing' their manual tranny fluid, you can do the same thing.

i agree with this, but i wouldnt do 3 refills.....a double flush will be fine unless the tranny fluid has NEVER been changed....supposedly a double flush replaces 80% of the fluid

just drop the pan, pull the filter and put it back together......flushing is BAD-just do a fluid change and replace the filter

Actually according to my fluid spreadsheet, it takes 3 refills to reach at least 80% changed.

Can't drop the pan or change the filter on Honda/Acura trannies

As far as I know unless you are way overdue it is better to do a drain/refill more often, i.e. 15k than a double drain/refill.

Reason being you change 1/3 of your ATF every time, so if in 15k you have 30% wear in your ATF, a change will get it back to 20%, so you are averaging 25% on your tranny on 6 bottles of ATF every 30k.

Lets say you do 3x drain/refill at every 30k, and you get (1/3)^3 of your stuff out, same wear percentage as above will net you 60% wear in 30k, your 3x change will get your wear back to 60 * (2/3)^3 = 17.78%, your average will be now 38.89% on your tranny on 9 bottles of ATF every 30k.

This haven't even count the amount of stuff you can clean out in your magnetic drain plug, which is not even linear as the math above.

See how the math ends up? ATF is so easy to change (just a rachet, a pan, and a funnel) that if you can afford the fluid, change it more often at shorter interval will net you a better bang for the buck.

Thanks everyone for comfirming that the flush can damage the tranny. The thing is, I bought the Teg. used last year and have no idea if the previous owners had performed a tranny fluid change. When I had it done last year, because I pretty much had my dealership do everything, they said the tranny fluid was black!! So, they concluded that the previous owner never changed it. The car has close to 180,000 kms. and it's a 95'. So, I had the tranny fluid changed twice last summer. And will have it done again later this year. I was told too much fluid change will not help the situation.
