91 Cr-X B20VTEC issues. Please help!
I think I have a couple of problems here, because I was impatient, but here it goes anyway. First, I have 600 miles on my new engine, and I have just started to rev it a little. I have a Skunk2 ecu, and just added an MSD ingnition today. I noticed the last two times that I drove it, that going from 3rd gear VTEC to 4th gear resulted in what felt like hitting the rev limiter even though I was only at 5200 rpm! Instead of figuring this out after having it happen twice, I installed an MSD ignition today. After the install, I took it for a test drive and all was great...then I decided to get on it a little, and the 4th gear thing happened again! Only this time, the car stalled and will not restart! There is also no check engine light or code. I tried a factory ecu, and ruled that out, I tried disconnecting the battery and that didn't work. I checked all my connections, and they are all good. Fuel, compression, then I noticed that the start signal from the distributor is present all the way to the MSD, but not at the MSD coil. Tried a new coil, and that doesn't work...so it must be the MSD ignition? Don't have one to substitute, any suggestions or other thoughts? Any thoughts on the "rev limit" thing...remember it happened before the ignition install, and seems to be what may have killed the ignition. Please Help!!!

conicidental at best, go back to stock, and see if you have good spark.
then check fuel related issues. did you go from a DPFI right to this b20/vtec or did you have the b16 in it before running?

The car was an Si, and was converted to OBD1. It also had a perfectly working B18c1 before this swap, that ran fine for five years. The fuel system is fine, and I am still worried about the 4th gear thing. It feels like hitting ignition cut, but I am only at 5200 when it happens, and it only happens a WOT, as I shift into 4th. It doesn't happen in 1st through 3rd...I didn't get a chance to try 5th though. I have not had a chance to remove or substitute the ignition yet, but it appears as though everything works up to the box. I will try cutting it out to see what happens.
hold off on that msd box swap. try the little stuff first.
before doing what i wrote after this, since your using the MSD ignition and cap/rotor/external coil. replace the wire that goes from the cap to the external coil, check for corrosion on the terminal on cap and coil.
now i know you have to rewire 2 wires and solder in the dizzy and cap to use any external coil so check that connection. it sounds like your distributor is either dead or coil connection inside the dizzy cap is lose/broken/corroded since moisture builds up in there alot.
goodluck

if by new motor you mean rebuilt? then you might of blew it since you didnt break it in properly, which would explain a couple of bucks you felt and then it finally gave and now wont start up... usually when motors blow no engine/CEL will come on, sometimes the oil dummy light comes on.

Perhaps your fuel pump went out? My rex used to struggle in higher gears cause the fuel pump was losing it.
If you blew it, you should have felt something like a horrible shaking or some other horrendous thing.

I figured it out! I eliminated every possibility, except for the dizzy internals, because I had a start signal at my msd box...what a waste of time. I finally decided to pull the distributor cap to check the ignitor, and found that the plastic plug that msd used to seal the coil tower on the cap had fallen out and proceeded to destroy every little EXPENSIVE piece of electronic equipment inside my distributor! Long story short, I had to get a new distributor sub-assy, a new ignitor and a new rotor. I resealed the coil tower with some silicone and the car runs like new. Thanks anyway you for your suggestions, and keep the Honda world in the know!
