On the real, the first problem was he bought a car that was "rareley raced" That means it has had the snot beat out of it. I will even bet it had headers and other parts, but the guy took them oout to A:sell them, B: use in a new car.
First thing I would do is check to make sure the cams line up at TDC, make sure the belt did not skip a tooth. Than have him get a compression and leak down test to see if the motor is OK.

I would recommend this:
1. Find a nice heavy object. A brick will suffice.
2. Start car.
3. Keeping car in neutral, or park, place brick on accelerator.
4. Wait.
5. Wait some more.
6. When the engine starts making horrible noises, go get lots of papers towels.
7. Clean up mess.
8. Buy new motor.
9. Install new motor.
10. Problem fixed.

are you sure its a GSR motor and not just a GSR body with a swapped LS motor? cause if thats the problem then i will have one of the hardest laughs. are you sure its a Vtec motor ? you should give us some pictures.

could be a cracked header...im goin through that rite now..makes ya loose back pressure and some horsey's...or he could need a driver upgrade...and if sooo i would suggest goin to the nearest dealership and sellin it and buyin a bicycle
ok so this is what we found out about his car. The original owner did a lot of teaking to the car. There were some bolts missing and the idle was higher than normal. We learned that his piston rings were gone and he is spitting smoke out of his exhaust. also also his timming belt is lose and we need to tighten it. and there's a crack or leak somewhere in the engine. and thats about it. That is what we found from a couple of mechanics off work.

This is why we test drive a vehicle before we buy it. Billows of smoke coming from your exhaust is a sign of a definite issue.
I'm sorry, I don't mean to be a dick about it, it must be a frustrating situation to be in, but it could've been avoided. You should go back to the guy who sold it, I don't know what it would accomplish, since your friend has already bought the car. Maybe you could take that brick that Educator was talking about, and when your done doing what he said..
take the brick.
bash yourself in the head.
harder.
now hit your friend with it.
now both of you drive it over to the guys house that you bought the car from.
hit him too.
twice.
now yell incoherently at each other.
now, urinate on his mailbox.
do the same thing he did and sell the car to someone, telling them its great.
Just kidding
. That's really all I could come up with, I wish I could help you out more. I hope it works out somehow. Good Luck, and Best Regards
