ats lsd (clutch type) - what fluid?
I've been using the mobil 1 synthetic gear oil (85w90), and need to change again... someone recommended to me valvoline, but it isn't full synthetic so I was hesitant..... and someone else recommended gear oil with a friction modifier or something... what are others running with their clutch type lsd?
I need something readily accessible at autozone, etc, as it's short notice.....
Thanks!

Ken,
I've had good results with Redline MTF (sorry I'm Canadian, dunno if they have that at Vatozone) and "friction modifier" bought from a Ford dealership. It comes in a little transparent squeeze bottle that stinks like fish oil....
You dump the entire squeeze bottle in....then add the Redline MTF.
I ran this on my KAAZ and it was VERY VERY smooth, easier to shift when cold than the molasses like KAAZ fluid and not to mention chatter/pops was greatly minimized compared to the KAAZ poop....

We run the ATS 20 plate in our H1 race car. We use Valvoline Gear oil with the CRC industries LSD Additive:

We have done this for the past 2 seasons. Rodney recently rebuilt our LSD, and said it was in great condition.
You can buy it all at Advanced Autoparts, or NAPA

Wow! How long have you guys been using synthetics w/ frioction modifiers in your diffs. I have a KAAZ and I was told by several sources that synthetics will eat away at the plates. I'm still running the original fill of KAAZ oil that came with the diff. but I was going to switch to ATS fluid which is pretty much exactly the same and I can get it locally and save on shipping. I'm going to subscribe to this to see what other opinions pop up.
Thanks
Thanks
Ken - another option (since I am a Motul *****)

.RJ's got the right idea..... buddy is using the Motul on his KAAZ...which is a synth too....
Type_RS_59: I don't think you have anything to worry about.....
Sounds like whoever told you that synths will ruin the clutch pack only wants you to keep buying expensive fluids....
My kAAz was inspected before I sold it and it was in fine working condition....some wear....but that's expected for about 50 or 60k kms.... a lot of weird fluid changes from the previous owner...before I fed it Redline MTF/Ford Fric. mix.

Subscribing b/c I'm very interested in this topic as well. From what I've seen there are different opinions on this, but seems that Valvoline is not harmful to the LSD. I like the idea of using the Valvoline because at that price you can change it often. I am not sure the ATS is a full synthetic either.
I had contacted Redline and they told me their oil was fine to use with a friction modifier as well. But I never heard of anyone using it until this thread, I decided to stay with ATS or Kaaz for now. Also, Yasu (ATS rep) says that if the tranny reaches a certain temp during track driving the fluid needs to be changed. I don't recall the temp off the top of my head.

I won't comment too much on the whole synth vs. non-synth, but like I told Black R via IMs....I tried using Castral (non synth) I think it was 75W90 and it reacted quite similarly to the KaaZ fluid....it was a bit noisier, so I added a little ford frict to it and it quieted it down but it was still notchy when compared to the Redline combo I used.
Spoon President said the same thing about the tranny fluid....Theoritically, you could extend the drain intervals, if you put a pump/cooler/filter.....(more **** that could go boom) but since the tranny fluid just sits inside the hot casing.... like a hot spring, unlike constantly flowing motor oil..... I like to change it every 2nd oil change.... And I use a Quaife now....
http://asia.vtec.net/article/M....html Take a peek under "gearbox" Pix aren't very good, but I found it interesting.
I think this kinda setup has been around forever for FRs but they probably use it mostly for the diff?

I did my second auto-x since the KAAZ installation yesterday, both with a co-driver, so that's a total of 26 runs. It's a lot quiter now than it was before. Does that just mean that it is fully broken in now or is it something to do with the temperature of the fluid? It seems to be working just as well as before.

kyle, you should have asked me about this yesterday.....

I don't have a ats, but I have some type of clutch lsd that I still need to figure out what type
. I'm a broke college kid so I run GM lsd additive with castrol 80-90 gear oil. I changed it out recently and tried a ford lsd additive with castrol 80-90 gear oil. Both of these combinations worked great. Considering most of you guys are ballers and can afford the kaaz gear oil you probably don't compare about my cheap alternative.

I never really thought of myself as a baller, but thanks
Rodney definately is though, his 'burban got mad VTEC yo!

You're probably right...but I didn't want to keep you from doing your business.

Are any of you guys running a carbon ATS LSD and if so, what sort of fluids and friction modifiers are you using?
I was going to start with 75W90NS Redline, and add modifier as needed. This is for a RWD autocross-only car...

Rather than start a new thread, I'm going to bump this one. Does anyone have any experience with alternate oils on the carbon ATS LSD's? I'd also like to see if there are another newer options than the ones discussed above.

Thanks for the mad bump
I'm trying to even remember what the hell I threw in my Prelude tranny last... mighta been 10w30 dino oil with a splash of the GM whale goo.
It's all I could come up with at short notice.
Just got a new tranny with a Kaaz, the old one with the OPM LSD is going to be the backup. I was planning to run the GM friction modifier again.

Not to tread jack, but...
I just picked up some Castrol Limited Slip gear oil 80w90 to break in my new Kaaz LSD. Has anyone used this? I think it's from their commercial line of products.
I also purchased 3 bottles of Kaaz fluid but I'd rather not waste $100 just to break in my LSD by doing figure eights for 30mins.

I've only ran Kaaz fluids in my tranny when I had Kaaz. I consult a few people that ran the LSD for full season and more and everyone seem to agree they perform best with Kaaz fluid.
I just recently move to Carbonetic Carbon LSD. Initial break in is very good. no noise, and engagement is smoother.
I was also told, that it is very important to break it in with their fluid. After that, there are several option of fluids.
BTW, I'm cheap, and often times I have to take the transmission out after only 1 race weekend. To save money, I drained the expensive fluid through a fine screen and re-use them. I usually use the fluid for about 4 race weekends.

yes, I did my initial break in with ATS. But I will continue to use ATS fluid. I just don't think it is worthwhile to risk it by using other fluids.
What is the cost anyway? About $50 per fluid change? That is $100 per year to me, and most racers. Should be $50 per year for street guys/weekend warrior.
Is it worth to ruin an over $1K LSD? Your call.

I have a clutch type lsd also, don't ask me what kind
. I just swaped the entire differential into my casing. Its probably going to need a rebuild this summer. Well, the fluid I have been running are two different combinations. I tried this out in college, because I was too broke to afford the high dollar lsd fluid. I've tried the Gm lsd additive with like 80/90 castrol gear oil. It worked great, no chattering or any noise what so ever. The little 4oz bottle from GM cost like $7-8 bucks. The parts guys would always look at me funny when I told them I used this in my honda transmission.
I then tried out the Ford lsd additive with 80/90 gear oil. If your going to use this stuff, make sure you get the older lsd additive. They have a new forumla but I haven't tried that one. Both of these combinations work great. Its a cheaper alternative compared to the $40 a quart kaaz stuff.

goforbroke, I don't know who charged you $40 for a quart of KAAZ fluid but I pay $44.50 for a 2 Liter bottle of it!
6ghatcg, when I spoke with KAAZ years ago they told me to use cheap, non synthetic stuff like the Castrol you bought for the break in and then switch to the KAAZ fluid. It has worked well for me so far so I am going to stick with it.
It seems like a lot of people are using synthetics but I've heard from KAAZ and ATS that synthetics are bad for the clutch plates and I'm not willing to take that chance on such an expensive part.
