wheels for autox 15" vs 13" size and 7" vs 8" width
im either considering a 15x7" wheel by kosi or an 13x8" steel wheel the cost for the 13" wheel is acually about 50$ cheaper total.
weight the 13"x8's weigh 14lbs. the 15x7's are about 4lbs heavier and require spacers.
also i will be running 225's so how much of a difference will the extra 1" in width meen to me?
any help would be appericated.

your gearing should be quicket with the smaller diameter tires. This is good for AX. If your car is not a pure autoX car and the possiblilty of larger brakes are in the future then perhapse the investment of a 15 wheel would be idea since a 13" limits your brake size.
get the 13x8" if they are legal for you class.
They will have less unsprung weight
They will have less rotational mass to spin up or stop
Tires will be much cheaper
If the overall diameter of the 13" +tires are smaller then you get better final drive ratio for better acceleration
If 13's fit and they are legal, I don't know why you would want to get the 15", unless you think you REALLY need better braking. But at auto-x speeds it don't think it's an issue with good pads.

what im conserned about is the 15x7" wide enough
i could get a set of 15x8's but they are 9 lbs heavier than the 15x7's but they are also about 70$ cheaper

Wy stop at 8" wide in 15 then? How about 13x10 or 15x10?

What class are you in? An SM car needs more brakes than a stripped FSP car does. There arent any good 13" STS tires, so a 15x7 (being that 8" is over the limit) is the obvious choice. In FSP (like me), run the widest 13" wheel you can fit, and get a nice short tire like the V710 215-50-13 or the AS305 in 225-45-13.
As Skierd mentioned each class has it's choice wheel sized based on available tires and rule restrictions. The 13" wheels are really only for small Street Prepared cars that can't change gear ratios or generate enough torque to turn big wheels.
Additionally, the wheel weights you list look really heavy for their sizes:
13x8 14lbs?
15x7 18lbs?
I'm sure you could find lighter wheels at a good price if you look around. For example:
Kosei K1 15x7 ~14lbs under $600 a set
Lenso VPD 13x7.5 9lbs under $500 a set

What are they made of, depleted Uranium? Kosei's are pretty damn strong AND common.
If you're looking for a dual purpose wheel, get the 15x7. Cheap R comp take-offs for track days are abundant, tires are relatively cheap, and there are more options than a 13" wheel. I do suggest the Kosei K1 or K1-TS as both are extremely common (i.e. easy/cheap to replace after an on track "incident" ).

Hardly any autocrossers use steel wheels because aluminum wheels are plenty strong for Daily Driving/Autocrossing/Road Racing and are substantualy lighter.
To answer your original question; yes the 1" wider wheel will make a good difference, however there are many outside factors that prevent this from making this a simple 13x8 vs 15x7.
What car are these wheels for? Have to checked to make sure the 13"s would clear your brake calipers?

Strictly with autox in mind, cuz I'm a believer in buying the tool for the job. "Dual purpose" usually means it'll do everything, but nothing "well".
If you plan to stick with the d series motor, and the EF platform you may wanna go with the 13's. And why bother with the 8's? A 13x9 is an even better choice IMO. That d series tranny needs help in the gearing department unless you plan on boosting it or a major NA build. Plus, the EF is light enough to do well with 13" wheels no matter how much power is available.

If you're planning on road racing and if I'm guessing correctly about the car you're driving, 13"s will not be legal. For ITA, and new this year, either a 14" or a 15" wheel with the widest dimension being 7".
I wound up purchasing a set of Borbet Type Ts a few years ago for autocrossing and thinking I was evenutally going to go road racing with this car. I have them still as a second set of wheels for racing.
However when focusing on two goals, autocrossing and road racing, you can not fully take advantage of the rules available. I also wonder why you're not running CSP... is there something with your car bumping you out of this class?
Final thought; I would suggest pricing everything out if you're going to eventually road race your car... I wound up keeping only a few things from the street CRX when I finally decided to buy a car already built. I'm not trying to talk you out of building your car, but just be aware of the costs before heading down that road.
Have fun

i have a 89 hatch with 99si breaks on all 4 corners also running a z6 running obd1 with 12.1:1 cr but am building a 12.3:1 z6 with rods cam pistons valvetrain portwork exc... i was told this would put me out of csp.
what are some things that bump me out of csp?
it looks like with what everything thats being said i have to make a choice:
go with the 13x8's @ 14lbs which would be 260$ and would help with my gearing
or go with the 15x7's which will deffinatly clear my 99 si brakes same weight as the 13's but wont help my gearing but will be a good choice for roadracing.
if 13x8's are illegal for roadracing on my ef then thats out of the question.
looks like the 15's are the way to go.
gearing isnt a huge deal my car puts down plenty or power and when i put an lsd in i can slide some zc gears into the mix. that should help out as much as those 13's
proceed with input:

then your out of luck with 99 si brakes
only panasport c8 13" ($$$$$) or lenso will fit on the front (good luck finding them)
i run in ep with a 94 ex. i run kosei & 225/45/15 and laterial grip is no longer the problem.
and if you are making good power, the 20" diameter will be too short and get alot of wheelspin even with limited slip.

For autox...go with the smallest diameter wheels with the widest width. Thats why I will be getting 13x9's for my RX soon.
However...since you plan on doing some road course at some point...15x7's would be a great compromise. Go with Khumo V710's as your rubber.

not necessarily..... if you have anything resembling some hp, you will want a larger wheel. i run 15's on my civic for my assault on SM.

True...eventually my plan includes 450 crank HP (for EA82) or 650 hp (for ER27) and either way...17"x13" rims wearing 335/35/17 Khumo V710's. I am not joking.
But for now...I'll be running 13's until I devlop more than 300 hp...Ive just got 70 more to go. Ive already got over 300 TQ at the crank.

I disagree. The only reason to run a taller wheel is lack of suitably wide tires in said size or brake diameter has increased. If someone could make a 235mm+ wide 13" wheels, you'd see it run.

okie, what data do you have supporting this info? this past year in SM the fastest fwd was on 15's, and in sm2 the fastest miata was on 16's.

Khumo makes a 235/45/13 in Ecsta V700 trim...im waiting on the 235/45/13 in V710 trim...*drool*
For now...215/50/13's are working fine for development of the car...
