Default This will Stump you (CRX dash in Hatch)

I need help on this, i have lots of expierence, and i worked at a honda dealer for almost 3 years, but this has me stumped.

My car 1991 DX Hatch paid $100 for it, with the interior stripped
Got a Dash out of a 89 CRX for free. Put it in the civic.
Car runs, ive been driving it for a coupple weeks.
'
2 problmes, the second being the biggest issue now. I need help on this :

1.) CRX gauge cluster wont work, changed the fuse box to a 91 civic and (the part numbers on the back and pin out i think were identical)
still didnt work, put the OE gauges from the civic in - works fine

My question to that is WHY? is there some wiring missing ? i thought that all 4g's were wired for tach- and even then, the speedo was the only thing that worked on the CRX cluster.

2.) Turn signals dont work , i changed the flash relay with a brand new one. I dont have the emergency/hazard flasher button in, so i am assuming that is why - but this is the real stumper that i have not a clue on - Today, at complete randomness, the right blinker light came on in the gauge cluster, and stays on, doesnt flash
Looked outside the car, and both of the right side turn bulbs are on, even when the car is off and the key is out !!!
I pulled the fuse, and unplugged the gauge cluster wire from the fusepanel and they are still on !!!!
WTF would cause this ! - i will be driving my other car, and unhooking the battery in the civic until i can figure somthing out.

but in the meantime, i need input from youguys

thanks in advnce

What I can tell you off the top of my head is that the dash wiring is different between 88-89 and 90-91, so the pinouts on the back of the cluster are different.

For your turn signals coming on, it sounds like you have power backfeeding through them from somewhere. Check all your grounds and make sure everything is clean and tight.

What underdash harness are you using?

Use your original harness from the 91 civic Dont use the CRX underdash harness.

The plugs for the 88-89 and the 90-91 cluster are the same, but they are pinned differently.

< has a crx dash in his hatch.

Thanks for the help

I am using the dash subharness out of the 91 civic - im pretty sure thats the only reason the gauges work.

I was looking around, and found that the wires for the bumper light had fallen down and were rubbing on my wheel, probably causing a short. I temporarily covered them with elec. tape, and the light was still on. went inside to find my voltmeter, came back out and the lights were off !

Put the fuses back in, and pluged in the harness, started the car, and the light was off
but now my seatbelt light is flashing constantly - (91 civic SI seats - wire connected to buckle, and buckle is in on both sides)

i think im chasing somthing.
Im in class right now, but i will have to keep digging when i get out.

the 88-89 crx dash pinouts are different from the 88-89 civic dash pinouts as well. I put a 88 crx si dash in my 91 hb std. I had to rewire all the wires for the guage cluster but I still have the 91 hazards/turn signals/defrost/illumination control (i've been to lazy to wire up the 88 ones even though I will keep the 91 illumination control).
https://honda-tech.com/zero...age=1 that link should help you a little

seems to be all cluster related. what i want to do is use my 88 ef dash in a 90 ef chassis. itr would be easy for me to just use the existing 90 harness thats there and to drop in my 88 dash.

93formula

if your talking about using a 88 dash in a 90 civic it will fit

the column you need to make it fit

with creative cutting.

I cut mine withmy cuttingwheel to form around the cluster

i never move my column, and the cut tucks under the cluster and you cant see it.

I just have to figurte out where my hazard switch went.

Maybe i can get pics later

the column wont fit without mods?? how come? i thought the 88-91 was pretty much the same dash?? the reason im swaping is because the 90 chasis i bought has ugly blue interior, and my 88 has black.

LOL i think im being misunderstood. id like to know if i can use my civic 88 dash and column, with a 90 civic harness.

the link seems all cluster related and crx/civic differences. all id like to knwo is if the 88 dash will work with a 90 harness. as far as i know the 88 dash is just a shell right???

yeah, just the cover over the steering column and ignition switch, some wiring gets in the way, it is just a small part you need to trim, nothing major

put in the hazard switch, it will probably fix it.

Why didn't you just ask me before?

I also have a clean unmolested 90-91 crx si underdash harness if needed. PM if interested.

Just don't let any autoparts stores tell you EP-53 12.8V Indicator Fuse is the right indicator.. I tried 3 before I said **** it and 'barrowed' one from another CRX at a local junk yard. - Darrell
