I bought my radios off Ebay. For the rest of the stuff, I went with the Racetech stuff. Fast turn around & good customer service. Plus, I was too chickensh@@ to drill my helmet to mount the kit.
added in edit-I think that one of the companies above used some of the talkabout type radios. The prices were a lot lower. Just don't expect too much performance compared to the other systems. You will probably end up with a little less than half the range.

You could get some family radios with headset..
get the little ear bud...
the driver may not be able to talk unless you do something to stop the wind noise from the mic.
the racing radios / racing electronics / trak radios
work really GREAT but you have to pay for the quality.

What I have is an earbud / and mic with push to talk... from radio shack.
you need the ear bud so it will fit over the helmet...
(it was around $20)
the mic has the push to talk button on the mic... so it's hard to push with gloves on.
plus the wind makes too much noise.
But..
you can give instructions, saftey info, lap times, and other "tips" to the driver without him/her talking back.... or at least you don't understand them
I think maybe a piece of cloth over the mic might solve this problem
But the real helmet kits are the best for in car..
and the headsets for the pitperson are good so the driver doesn't hear all the other cars noises when you are talking to the driver
we use these for stock car racing.. and it's great (much better than my current ghetto rig)
