yup. also, w/ ATS leave it in 2nd when driving in rush hour traffic.... no need for constant 1->2 shifts

Maybe he was thinking about driving in 5th gear at low low speeds.. I heard that was stressful on the gears?

Not on the gears; on the engine. The Load will create knock.

One of the funniest things I've heard or read for a little while on here.

About the only time using 5th is a bad idea is when trying to accelerate (in 5th) up a hill from 2000 rpm (from some other post on here a week or two ago). That was definately a sitiuation where a downshift or two would be recommended.

On the highway ... I used to look for 6th (with gas prices and ticket et al)!

Hmm...driving in 5th at 10mph would be dumb. I don't think you're car is going to "asplode" though.

That would be funny to watch, grandpa coasting through a parking lot in fifth, followed by a poof of smoke and a rod shooting through the oilpan.

For maximum fuel economy, drive in the highest gear possible without lugging the engine. At highway speeds, this means fifth most of the time (except in heavy traffic).

For maximum acceleration, drive in the lowest gear possible without overrevving the engine.

If the 5th gear was so bad, then why did Honda include it with the car? Might as well make it a 4-speed with all the weight included in making it a 5-gear tranny (not including reverse of course)
