Lessons Learned - General
Lessons Learned
Over the past 6 or 7 years, I've learned several things regarding my car, myself, and racing in general. Figured, I'd share some of these, as well as get YOUR lessons learned.
Car Choice
Granted, my racing career has been solely limited to a Honda CRX, I've had the opportunity to take hot laps/autocross runs/drag runs in Corvettes, WRXs, MR2s, Civics, 300zx TT, etc. I've also been surrounded by friends who have their wealth of troubles and successes with each. Here is what I've learned.
1st. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS race a car that you can afford to toss a car into a wall and not be in a world of financial trouble. Because if you CAN'T afford to total the car, it WILL happen.
2nd. Make sure the car is EASY to work on. Nothing more frustrating than having to replace a clutch line on a MR2 turbo when there's only 2" of space to work in or having to locate a vacuum leak on a RX7 GSL-SE when it has like 900 vacuum hoses. And believe me, you will have to work on it from time to time.
3rd. If at all possible, find something reliable. The worst thing is to be out at a race, preparing the car weeks in advance, making sure everything is in tip-top shape and in your first session or first fun… and BOOM... something breaks. Let me tell you, it's REALLY tough watching your friends racing while your car is broken.
4th. Have at LEAST two cars. The car you race and the car you get to work in. This becomes a lifesaver when your car that you race is broken and you need to run to the store.
As a sidenote, over the past 6 some odd years, I've spent roughly $17K on my CRXs. That includes 2 CRXs, 6 different engines and gearboxes, brake kits, replacement parts, seats, a cage, wheels, tires, etc. or roughly $3000 a year. this does not include gas, insurance, or oil changes. I don't think it's a whole lot, considering the amount of time I've spent on the track beating the crap out of it.
Suspension Setup
I've never claimed to know what I was talking about when tuning a suspension. I read a lot of threads/posts about what's the best combination of parts. I'm a person who likes to show up to an event, race the car, then leave. I don't fool around with tire pressures throughout the day. I don't play with shock adjustments all that much. The only thing I've changed ever, was the sway bar settings… here's what I've learned over the past 6 years.
- I don't know what I'm doing.
- Koni shocks and Ground controls are MORE than enough for what you need. Those full coilover setups like Tein, JIC, etc for CRXs are overkill, UNLESS you are needing those extra tenths of a second. I've NEVER read any article or race report where a guy in his Honda Civic/CRX took 1st place cause he switched from Koni/GC to some "true" coilover setup like Teins.
Brakes
The endless debate. Which brakes to use on a CRX. Over the years, I've gone thru about 6 different setups.
- The stock 9.5" brakes work fine, if you use good pads, good tires, and good fluid.
- Wilwood calipers suck
- 10.3" brakes work fine too, with more fade resistance.
- I've NEVER faded my stock 9.5" brakes
- I still have rear drums and have replaced the shoes once. wait, nevermind. I've NEVER replaced my drum shoes. I haven't ever touched any portion of the rear drum assembly except the wheel cylinders (one was leaking). Outside of that, I pull the drum off to inspect, and put them back on. SIX YEARS… name one guy with a rear disc setup on his CRX that has gone that long and has chalked up 30,000 miles, half of which was spent on a road course.
- Motul 600 is nice. Valvoline synthetic is easier to find.
- cross-drilled rotors are stupid
- Toyotas have the best OEM brakes ever.
Power
With Hondas.. you never have enough power. is it bad? never. I took a friend's 300zx TT w/ a dynoed 370+rwhp and I couldn't get it around the track as fast as my then 134whp CRX. Why? it was tough to get it to put all the power down.
- GSR engines are freakin awesome! the B16 was nice too for it's rev-happy-ness. but I was still struggling to pass people on the straights. Thankfully, corner exit speeds helped out a lot when I had the DOHC ZC and the B16. The GSR gives you some room to mess up a turn and still have the power/torque to pass someone.
- I've never felt the need to build an engine up. Why? I'd rather blow up a stock internal engine than an engine I spent $2000 building.
- There's ALWAYS someone faster
Driving
I'm not a great driver. I'm not a crap driver either. I think if there were a 100 racers, I'd place in the top ten. with that said, I have the hardest time explaining HOW I drive. I know I turn here, then accelerate here, brake here, etc. There are some people who are extraordinarily detailed about their driving…some of which are very fast… some of which are slow. I'll never understand that 5th level of dissection in driving. get in, strap in, drive, smile, laugh, don't die.
- I enjoy driving other people's cars. It's always a blast… whether it's a Focus or a Lotus Elise… I enjoy it.
- People enjoy driving my car. I haven't met anyone who has driven my car and HATED it. Disliked the handling, sure. not completely ok with the snap-off-throttle-oversteer, sure… disliked it? nah.
- I will let virtually anyone drive my car. Why? cause I built it to be beaten on. I'll never understand the guys who are sooooo touchy about someone driving their HONDA. $3 and some tape and you can fix virtually anything on the car.
- There's ALWAYS a better driver.
Misc
- If you're NOT having FUN… stop.
- Don't expect to be first, just don't be last.
- You control the steering wheel, the brake pedal, and the gas pedal…WHATEVER happens, a car crash, a spin, anything… you had control over what happened. If you realize this NOW, you'll be less angry when it does happen.
- Don't hate any motorsport, until you have tried it more than once. whether it's lawn mower racing or autocrossing…
- burping in a full face helmet makes you really appreciate gum
anyone got any tips to offer?

when you fix one thing on your car, another thing WILL break
i always say how much i hate my car when **** breaks, which at first seemed to be an endless battle to keep it on the road. but the reality is 15 year old cars do break and everytime i drive it, all the time into fixing it doesn't even matter. I'd trade 1 hour of good driving for a weekend worth of fixing.
i think this sums up a lot of honda-techies

When I think of the things my car breaks, I always think of all the other 14-15 year old cars that take the beatings we put on these cars and how well they STILL perform. Whereas all the other 14-15 year old cars need much more MAJOR fixes. But then again, how hard is it to replace a honda tranny compared to that of an old *** Supra, RX-7, or any mild performer that takes this much wear and tear. I can swap a motor for less than it costs' most people to repair a head gasket. And it is SURE is a hell of a lot easier to do myself. Much love to Honda/Acura engenuity[sp?] and ease of use/repair. - Darrell
On my last CRX, when it was jacked, i lost alot of my little problems. The suspension sqeeking, the ever-breaking weld on the door stopper, the one aftermarket fender that i could never get far enough away from the kit so i never fully opened my door LOL
Then i got the recovery and inherited a whole new set of problems on this DX chassis. #1 its a DX chassis LOL where's my sunroof!!! hahaha anyway...
So i still want another CRX, stock as possible with all the perfect pieces, vibration minimal, stock firewall sound deadening. And best of all a rebuild from scratch - new kit, new engine, new paint.
"droppedcrxsi"'s CRX is very close to perfect but still has a random vibration here and there.
The lesson is : "It can never be DONE and it can never be PERFECT."
So don't try, if you find yourself stressing about a scratch or being pissed because a rock hit your bumper and nicked it. Sell your car and live your life. Cars get damaged and keeping it in a garage so it can't be hurt is just plain stupid. You enjoy driving it, thats the point.
People will not notice the scratch you do just like people don't notice that zit on your face that you do.
Thats my 2 cents
Driven is cool.

what I learned is listen to those who are in the sport first!
Having members like Driven have taught me alot and showed me what and where I should go/do next.

I agree 100% with everything you said, except this:

I have seen far too many people blow up someone elses motor or hit a curb or do something completely boneheaded due to a momentary lapse of judgement or lack of experience. Chalk it up to entropy: it's a lot easier to destroy something than it is to build it, and it only takes milliseconds in the wrong gear to send months of hard work on an engine onto the ground. 'You break it, you bought it' applies, but as we know, not everyone lives up to that. I am selective in who drives my CRX, and like you, those who do have very little bad things to say about it.

I agree, got to be careful with those dumb *** friends with no job to repair **** they break on your car. Let a friend drive my **** for 15 mins came back smoking and sounding like a sti. I would say if you do the car right the first time it will last. i love to rape my car thats what it was built for and if i blow my **** oh well money well spint.

well...
if you know the guy who is about to pilot the car is a bonehead...
i stress two things whenever someone drives my car:
1. it does NOT go over 8500rpms.
2. do NOT lift in a turn.
i haven't had a problem yet...of course, i always have my video camera on and running whenever someone is driving it.

Very good point, no need to stress about the little things. i have a dent in my rear quarter panel and rock chips all over the front of my car from long college drives. but the car still looks great as a whole. ill get em fixed eventually but until then..
just call them battle scars and move on

I agree as well. Slight flaws just give the car a bit of character. Now if the dent is as big as a basketball, we have a problem.

Good info about the brakes, I just replaced my 9" brakes with all new stuff. Nice thread.
I have learned to take a bit more time and patience repairing/replacing critical things so there is no reliability issues..that is KEY
Tires and brake fluid are very important things on track days...make sure they are tiptop shape no old, hard or "decent tread" will do
Carry some spare tools in the car, simple things like needle nose pliers, 10 12 14mm wrench and such. Those could be a godsend in an emegency situation even if its to help someone else.
89mm cranks rule
Don't crossthread a bolt, the old saying crossthread is better then no thread is wrong.
Stupid excuses or lies when mistakes are made are easily spotted and everyone knows it.
