Default 96 accord (tranny trouble?)

I read these forums often but dont post much. I did a seach and could not find any answers.

Anyway heres the problem.
I have a 96 Accord F22B2. Every now and again ill open the car up on the highway. The car is responsive and works fine but at the top of 3rd gear the rpms get stuck.
The car redlines at 6200 roughly. In third gear the car will reach around 6k and then the tach needle falls to 5500ish and slowly builds back up. Its as if the car refuses to shift into 4th. During normal driving i have no problems.
The car has an auto transmission with 107,000 miles on it.

Any idea what is causing this hesitation?

Our cars have a transmission lock-up I believe it is called. It is part of the torque converter. It acts like an extra gear. It only engages on the highway after you reach highway speeds. If your transmission fluid is dirty it doesn't engage as quickly and maybe not at all. Mine was a problem until I flushed or changed the transmission fluid about 4 times at 113,000. Don't know if this is your problem but wanted to make you aware. It is almost like a 5 gear but since you are having the problem in 3rd gear don't know if this could be it. It does drop your rpms when it kicks in. What rpm do you run at 60mph on the highway? When it is working my 97 turns 2300rpm. When it was not kicking in it turned 2600 rpm at 60. Hope this helps!

Sounds like you need to do a transmission change. I used honda fluid and changed it at 1000 mile intervals. You get 2.5 quarts to drain each time and it is really easy because of where the drain is located. Not need to jack the car at all. Just drain and add 2.5 quarts for four times and hopefully it will clear up like mine did. Trans holds 6 quarts total. You need a funnel that fits the transmission dipstick hole. I ordered the 10 quarts from manchester honda
