My steering rack has been making a thumping/bad strut like noise ever since I bought it. It only makes the noise when I hit bumps, and sometimes when I turn the wheel while sitting still it pops. When I bought it, the bellows around the inner tie rods were ripped and the rack was dry. Would the rack itself be making noise? I've replaced the inner and outer tie rods, lower ball joints, and struts (upgrade ). There is also a popping noise when the car is sitting still and I turn the wheel to get out of a parking space or something. Maybe every half a turn there is a pop noise.

What I'm getting at, is I found the Quaife quick ratio rack and pinion... If the rack is making the noise, then wouldn't the Quaife rack "fix" the problem? I suspect its the rack just because the bellows were ripped and empty. What all would I need to rebuild it along with the Quaife rack and pinion gear? Thanks for the help.

 

replace the steering rack bushing, its on the passenger side. a $10 piece.

or spend whatever hundreds of dollars on a quaife...

 

Well, I'm wanting the Quaife anyways. I was just wondering what I should replace as well as, or if just the rack itself would fix the problem.
