why does the 117hp HX engine get better mileage then the 115hp VP engine?
Hi,
I am looking to buy a 2005 civic and I see that the Hx gets the best gas mileage. I am wondering why it gets substantially better mileage than the VP which has 2hp less horsepower
thank you!

i wouldnt buy a new civic unless its lx or ex because they are vtec, but it depends on what you want. i have an 04 ex and i get 38 mpg in it. in the city.

LX doesn't have VTEC, only the EX.

VP is just the value package LX I beleive. The reason the HX gets better milage is because it's a more efficient engine in a lighter car. More HP != less milage. The HX has a lean burn system that only opens one intake valve and barely opens the other before vtec kicks in. VTEC kicks in early though, at 3k rpm, so that you don't hang in the no power range very long. Basically at cruising speed in a HX you get great milage, but when you open it up, it jumps to vtec quick to give you the power you need. Also the HX has little things like roller rocker arms on the valve train and lighter wheels to help increase milage.

I know this is off-thread, but have you guys seen the new Lexus Hybrids? Their system is pretty sweet.
i just copied the following from that site that SkoundrelUSA posted:
All Civics come with manual transmission, and all but DX and Si offer automatic.
haha the dx only comes in manual??????? too funny
as to answer the question, does the civic hx still have the vtec-e opposed to the vp not having it?

One thing is the later model 2001-2005 doesn't come with ait conditioning stock.
Really, I'd take a used one anyway (96-00), you'll find aftermarket parts easier to come by. Things are upgradable with Civic EX/Si/Integra parts (you'll probably want to change the transmission and brakes over to EX ones eventually), so you can upgrade for CHEAP. The wheels are light, and can fit 195 azenis on them so no need to replace them. It's so light that a suspension upgrade really makes it go. There's just a ton of good things about it and nothing bad really.
I'm running a 97 HX as a track only car now. It's stripped. I replaced the power steering with the DX manual rack. I'm using CRX Si seat bottoms (helps hold in much better than the stock seats). Running the stock wheels with 195 Azenis on them. GSR swaybar with Si endlinks in the rear. DSM T25 turbo off a CRX Hf manifold. Integra rear disc brakes (don't have the fronts just yet, and they're really the more important ones :-\ ), Civic EX transmission. All those parts are off other cars so they came in really cheap. And the entire time you're modding the car you're getting 40+ mpg, without foregoing the power windows and locks :-p
And oh ya, it has VTEC-E too.
Anyway, I tend to go on about the HX, but mine has gone from my daily driver to my audio car to my stolen car (
) to my track car, and has excelled in every area.
