Default Fresh ground cam ... Break-in?

Just had a camshaft ground to hit maximun lift allowed (no duration limit) by the SCCA F Prod rules. I sent out an old Si cam and they cut a new cam out of it. I have a used but solid engine in the car for the early events and I have a proper race engine in parts on the shelf awaiting it's time.

I have to take the distributor apart on the old engine in the car so I thought I'd go ahead and install the cam. Any suggested break-in procedures (with the realization that this is a racecar and driving on the street or much run-in is not really an option) with a fresh regrind?

I have a single SOHC adjustable cam gear that can go on as well although I have not used one before. I realize they are of limited value on an SOHC car but thought it couldn't hurt. I don't expect a trip to the dyno soon so I won't be able to tune it thoroughly.

Lee,

I have a Delta 272 in my street car (D16A6) with adjustable cam gear. When I installed the cam I used assembly lube, other then that I don't know of any special break-in for cams. After some research on where to adjust the cam timing to I went with 2* retard....that will move the power band up in the rpm range. Dyno would be the best to "dial" it in, but on a SOHC as you know, you are just moving the power band up or down.

Did you have Delta grind the cam for you?

Lot's of assembly lube and oil when installing the cam. Crank the engine without firing to build oil pressure. Make sure timing it good. Fire the engine and don't let the revs fall below 2,000rpm. Hold at 2,000rpm for about 15-30 minutes. Shut off, cool down and check valve clearances and adjust as necessary. Then go have fun.

Yeah, you shouldn't need any break in time per se. What Hammond suggests should be good enough to wear off the assembly lube.

Yes, Delta did it. It is probably more mild than what you have as the rule book has a restrictive lift limitation so it was less than their normal streetable performance cams. I just had them get the most duration out of it they could for that max lift and go for it.

Cool. Delta does great work and they are very nice people. .490 max lift correct?
