Respose from Sherman Chao
My turn (https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1237456) about the aborted purchase/sale of my ITR that has resulted in 1) Dan being mad that I would not sell my ITR to him, 2) his father being out $ to change plane tickets, 3) evil spirits that cut short my weekend track event, 4) personal property damage at my home that is clearly intentional, and 5) most important, damage to my name. Please notice that I do not hide my name in either my email address or call signs on various internet boards, so I hold myself to the highest standards. That doesn’t mean I don’t make mistakes in judgment or action occasionally, and in this case I have. However, I was not alone, and if you want to keep an open mind, read on; if your mind is already made up before hearing from me, then simply read the last paragraph.
Dan did a good job describing the communications we had concerning my car, and the fact that I was looking to sell my ITR for a possible BMW. So what went wrong and what mistakes did I make? It comes down to seller’s remorse and my failure to communicate that to Dan before they bought plane tickets. What is my response to this? I shouldn’t have vacillated on my plans to keep the ITR once the BMW deal fell through, and I didn’t know Dan had already bought plane tickets when I called him about my decision to keep the car.
Now regarding the plane ticket fiasco, I did not know Dan had already purchased tickets. I emailed Dan Thursday morning (May 5th) to give him advice on which airports would be best before I disappeared on my Watkins Glen weekend and to Europe the following week. We had not spoken about flight plans in detail before. At about 4:30 pm that day, I check my email one last time before heading off to the track and learn that Dan had “already ordered” his tickets, not purchased them or that they were non-refundable. As an aside, Dan has tickets to Hartford when I made clear in my posting and my communications to Dan that the car is near NYC.
At approximately 6 pm, as I am driving alone to Watkins Glen with no distractions, I think hard about why I’m selling the ITR and conclude that I’m not ready and I call Dan on my cell (using headset) to tell him that. I wanted to stop this process knowing only that Dan had ordered tickets, not purchased them.
What mistakes did Dan make? Not checking with me beforehand about the preferred airports so that I would know just what he had planned or done, and not trying to talk me into selling my ITR for a second time even if I wasn’t buying the BMW. Dan was upset when I called as he was very anxious to buy my ITR, which is perfectly fine. His aggressiveness persuaded me to sell after my BMW deal died a few days ago, and he might have been able to persuade me again when I called Thursday evening. Instead, he mentioned the ticket problem in anger. His anger is understandable, but it was hard for me to sympathize when I didn’t know about his ticket purchase, not ticker order, and all Dan and his father wanted to talk about was the ticket. It might have been different if Dan would have said, “Look, we already have these tickets, can we talk about what we can do about this or the car?” Instead, I stayed on the phone to accept the angry words from Dan and his father. I did not hang up until Dan’s father made clear he was finished.
Now regarding my family and home. One or more of you on this board knows where I live because my property has been damaged. If you want to exact revenge, then seek me out and not my family or my property. At some monetary level, the insurance company will want to investigate and possibly call in law enforcement. It is your choice as to whether you want to risk a criminal record for vigilante actions triggered from an internet posting explaining one side of an unfortunate situation. The world is not perfect, I am not perfect, none of us are, but there is no excuse for intentional harm/damage without provocation.

Do you mind telling us what was done?
Was this in New York/Brooklyn or Connecticut?

Good for you to speak out about your situation.
But, you've gotta be kidding me. When someone orders tickets in my neck-of-woods, it usually means that he/she is purchasing tickets.
Seller's remorse happens. But, for you to screw him over plane ticke cost is just plain weak.
But, it's up to you and Dan to figure it out (if the fiasco is still going on).

I'm not trying to start **** or take sides, but fwiw everytime I've "ordered" plane tickets I've had to pay for them.
To people who would vandalize your place over such a small thing.
edit: Cosworth beat me to it.

Nuttin for nuttin but I just saw a case like this on Judge Judy the other day (yeah OK laugh).
And she ruled in favor of the buyer who was in a very similar situation.
At the very least I can see you keeping your car and compensating Dan & Father for whatever they can't recoup from their plane tickets.
Best of luck sorting this out.

Not to be a dick, you both sound like intelligent people. I'm simply wondering why you have to bring others into the muck for some kind of stupid validation (I'm referring to both parties btw)? Personally I don't care nor do I think many others do. Transactions go bad all the time. So ******* what? Both parties need to stop talking and pointing fingers about it and simply handle your business AS AN ADULT, ON YOUR OWN.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Lack of communication caused this whole ordeal! Although i understand its ultimately up to the seller regarding ones final decision, i would find it very frustrating to be in the perspective buyers shoes as well. I feel its only fair that Dan is as least compensated for the plane tickets he purchased. A verbal contract was made, and i too would have went ahead and ordered the tickets simply b/c the sooner you can order them the more $$$ you are going to save. To Sherman...i am sorry that your property was damaged despite whether this had anything to do with this deal or not. Thats immature and stupid! Again, i feel as though this whole situation could have been avoided had the communication been better.
