When I first got my rex in 03 it hadn't been registered since 01. After it got impounded for expired registration (ugh!) I ended up paying about $230 for back registration. Then there was to smog too.

This is just my horrible experience from a few years back. It now costs $51 to reg every January and test only smog every other year for me

Only in my experience maybe I'm special.

I'd suggest taking a walk through the DMV's website for answers to your questions

If the car was registered as NONOP[not operational] then there should only be a normal registering fee. If the car was registered as an operational vehicle but has yet to pay yearly registration fee, you need to pay the fees. They charge you a late fee[ like $15 I beleive] for being up to 30 days late, then from 30-90 days there's another fee ontop of the first[$60 I believe] and then there's a YEARLY fee thats upwards of $100+. He will have to bring all fee's up to current date to register this vehicle. Now assuming it has ~2 years unregistered, I would imagine it being safe to say he'll pay $150-$300, this is only from what I can remember, actual charges may be different, and also I believe it differs per vehicle/per late fee. I would try to act asap on this because those fee's just keep adding up. I almost bought an 92 Carolla until I found out it hadn't been registered in 8 years and the fee was over $1k! - Darrell

no worries you aren't the only one, I just posted my fabulous DMV registration experience in the other thread that DOHC side created.
