CRX-keep d16a or swap?
I re-inheriteted my 88' CRX Si from my sister.(she bought herself a new car when the CRX died on her) The last mechanic she had look at it said it was a bad distributer- he changed it and still did not work. So it has been sitting for a year waiting for me to work on it. I have finally decided to fix it and use it as my commuter, to save a bit on gas.
The question I have is what can I do for $2000? ...is a b16 swap still possible?
How much more would I have to save for a GSR swap?
Anybody in LA with experience doing swaps willing to help me out for some cash?...or experience troubleshooting to see whats wrong with the d16a?
Thanks,
The only picture I have of it's current state

For $2000 you can easily do a b16 swap. Or if you want to fix the car and leave it stock it's up to you. Let me know i've done plenty of swaps on crx's so i can do it for you weather you want to leave it stock or swap it.
Well, you are starting with an si, that is a plus, especialy when you look at swaping. I started with an 88 dx, and that is a little more work cuz the dx only has 2 injectors. I did it for my first time last summer, with the help of some online reading, and the info I got off of honda-tech it was easy, and I have very limited knowledge about cars. I sure did learn alot doing it myself. Cost me about 1700 total for all the parts and the JDM motor w/30-50k miles. So yeah you can do a b16 swap no problem w/$ to spare.
Once you find a motor, think parts, the big ones you'll need are:
Shift Linkage - 150 +/-
Motor Mounts(my cost including rear mounting bracket) - 300
Axles - 150 +/-
All i can say is read up about it before you do it and plan it out before you yank your si motor out.

Just get it fixed first.
Especially if you don't know what's wrong with it!
If you can't diagnose the prob, what if you pay for a swap and the prob doesn't go away...waste of time and money.
Get it fixed, enjoy it, they swap when you're bored of it.
My First swap was because i had a bad tranny in my DX,
$800 later i ended up with a ZC installed with a MESSED UP Si TRANNY!!!
Find the PROB, fix it and kick back.

BOOST IT! seriously tho you'd be much happier i bet with a turbo d16 than just a plain b16! im not knocking on the b swaps at all i plan on doing one in the future but i got a complete turbo setup for under a grand and im easily gonna be in the high 13's on street tires if i can only get a better reaction time/60ft and get some real tires. i got a best of 14.7 yesterday with a .841 r/t and it wasnt my best 60ft at 2.45 but i got a 2.34 on my next one. the math is there for 13's and im only running 5.5psi. like HumanResource said just get it fixed, if u get tired of it then look into a swap i guess.

Ok, sounds logical - I'll get it fixed first, drive around in it,fix any other things that might go wrong while just sitting there for a year and save some money for a B18c swap.

What's the BEST engine for my Honda?
Answer:
125cc Honda dirt bike motor. It weighs under 50lbs, revs to 10000rpms, and makes 320hp/liter.
There, now that we solved the question that is constantly on everyone's mind, let's talk about pizza.
Seriously now, the best engine for your honda is WHATEVER YOU CAN AFFORD TO BUY!
If you have $1000, DOHC ZC.
If you have $2000, get a 1st gen b16a. It'll cost that much to get it in.
If you have $4000, get a GSR/B18C1.
If you have $5500, get a ITR/B18C5.
If you have $10K, and no use for your car for a month or two... get a K20.
Edited for the Whiners:
This is NOT a complete list, as there are mini-mes, LS-VTEC swaps, budget/poor man's ITRs, etc. Use the damn search button a bit more religiously.
What's the best engine for boost... the one that gets TUNED properly.
What's the best engine for drag racing... the one you spend the most money on making FAST.
What's the best engine for road racing... same thing.
What's the most reliable engine... the one you MAINTAIN religiously.
What's the cheapest engine... the one that's in your car.</TD></TR></TABLE>

Call Mike at HighEnd in West Covina 626-332-8565. Tell him Darrell sent you and he'll give you a good price on a complete B16 changeover or whatever swap you want. Or if you want to do the swap yourself, start a shopping list and get started. But with 2k you can have a bolt on'd B16 or a quick *** SOHC VTEC/NonVTEC. All depends on what you want out of your car. - Darrell

b18c with lsd - ~$3200
b16a sirII - ~$2200
hasport mounts + c. to h. conversion - $500
i recommend a hydro tranny because it'll be so much easier to find a replacement in the future.
this thread made me miss my b16a CRX si
