Default Can I wetsand my tai lights?

My tail lights have a bunch of fine scratches in them, if i wetsand with like 2000grit or something like that will that help to smooth it out? I wanted to reduced the scratches and then rear-clearcoat them....

Can I wetsand or will it just mess them up more?

I had the same problem, i got like a 1500 grit and wetsanded mine. Then took some 3M rubbing compound and buffed it, then went back over the tailights with 3M finish restore and they turned out great..

do you mean 2000 grit?? because 200 grit is really rough. I've never done my lights with a rotary buffer, it works pretty good just doing it by hand. If you have deeps scratches, they probably won't come out. Use some 1500 or 2000 grit sand paper. yes rubbing compound is finer then 200 or 2000 grit sand paper.

hmm, don't know why but at first I saw you type down 200 grit... i guess i'm seeing things

only if you don't do it right...

Mine.. I wet sanded 1500, 2000, clear coated, and buffed.. you can do the same to head lights too.

ya it was a typo, i fixed it, i mean 2000 of course, 200 is like pebbles glued to papaer .

Just wetsanded and now there is a pretty even "dullness" to it, ima swing by advanced auto and get those 2 3M products

Can I clear coat over teh 3m finish restore? Or should i do that after the clearcoat?

Thanks!

Hmmm.. not sure if it's a good idea to clear coat it. Usually clear goes on after fresh paint.. I dunno, but if you want to clear it I would either scuff up the tail lights or wet sand it, clean it, use some wax and grease remover then clear it. Then let it dry and then wet sand it again with 2000 grit. Then use rubbing compound and polish.

The rubbing compound will fix some of the dullness, but its more like a fine wetsand. The finish restore is gonna give em that shiny look we all love...

The clear coat will fill in all the fine scratches and make them super freakin clear and shiney too. I did it to a set of my friends lights.

no need to buff or wax it or anything. The clear coat will fix it all. </TD></TR></TABLE>

Buffing after clear coating gives it a nicer shine and the wax gives it protection.
