Default turbo rebuild info..........

i'm looking for anyone with knowledge of rebuilding turbos.. i have a mitsu.18g (greddy) and it starting leaking oil so it off and figure i'll take it apart. i due have mechanical knowledge of how things work. so i figure no big deal, i just got a kit with bushings, seals, thrust spacers, etc....i'm lacking some specs. like compressor wheel nut torque..... and what to look for as far as what could be damaged.. i've cleaned all the parts and other than the bushing on the turbine side being alittle dark, every thing looks ok... NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! please

edit::::::::::::: i've rebuilt the turbo with kit i ordered from a local desiel shop... it was a mitus kit and all the bushings mic'd the same as the old ones.. the turbine shaft spins freely i used red locktite on the compressor nut and tightened it not sure of the torque spec just did it by feel. i installed the turbo last weekend and no oil leaks yet i haven't boosted it hard yet so well see what happens... over all it was easy but i supect that if u replace a major part ( turbine shaft, compressor wheel) it would be best to leave it to a pro..... i did use a marker to mark the nut to the compressor wheel and all so the tip of the shaft jsut to index it make sure it was just like stock....

Where did it leak oil? Did the return line get backed up? I believe my 18g is leaking oil out of the compressor housing possibly from the shitty return line setup i have.

it was leaking from both compessor and turbine side... the oil return is like greddy says to install.... nipple on the oil pan and on the turbo connected by a piece of rubber hose.... it many leaked worse just after you boost up and let off idle was ok...

Rebuilding a turbo requires rebalancing it. You can get away if you mark the compressor nut before you take it appart. That way you can assemble the nut exactly at the same balance point.

Some turbo's are balanced at the compressor wheel.

Hope that helps....

I just rebuilt my t3. ONLY problem I'm having is I still can't get the center housing to rotate.

I'm about to sell it and buy another turbo because I can't get the drain to point down, which was the original reason I had to rebuild. I blew the seals because of that crappy return.

bump for a good question.

Also will the "dotting" work even for turbos that have lots of shaft play?
