Not the best bike to begin on, but if you have respect for the bike, control of your ego, and common sense then you should be fine starting on a 600. But know that you will go down so a brand new bike might not be the best idea. If so get some frame sliders.
Good luck, and be safe!

I outgrew my 600 half way through the first season. I think anything less would be dumb.

So you guys would recommend a 600 over the 250R for a newb?
I won't be able to afford a new car until another year and half. (I just bought a Mazda 3 for my fiancé while she's in nursing school) I just wanted something cheap, doesn't take up space in my garage, and fun to keep the miles down on the old coupe during the summer. I'm not trying to show off, pop wheelies, etc.
6' 185lbs. if that makes a difference.

Those things are pretty cool. I got to ride one a few months ago. Neat bikes

I agree with the Ninja 250.
Too many guys just jump on bikes, ride for a week and think they're invincible. A 250 is still enough to get yourself into trouble, but you don't get there nearly as quickly as a 600 or bigger.

dont start off on a 250...but i wouldnt go any higher than a 750. I'd say gsxr 600
Thats when I started off on (a 1997), and it was perfect!
250 waste of money, when you are going to want something more in a month. 600 you can keep it cool with for awhile, but you will have the power when you get a bit more experienced

if you are going to ride it point a to point b, then get what you prefer.
Not all people with bikes play "Biker Boyz"
A lot love the freedom of going through the canyons, riding along the coast, etc...for the love of bikes

I know, I'm just joking around. I didn't know how to put it. All I was trying to say is that I don't want it for speeding or "stunting", just as a fun and cheap commuter for a year or so.

If your ego can take a 250, then ride a 250. No reason at all to step up to a faster bike.
It's just like my Miata - cheap, fun, quick but not fast. I could have bought an S2000 or Z4 or Boxster. And I could get from 0-60 a bit quicker. But it really wouldn't have much impact on my enjoyment of top-down motoring. And the cheaper insurance, better fuel economy, and less worry about it getting scratched/dinged/etc sure is nice.

Kellen Winslow Jr. seems to prefer the GSX-R 750 for a starter bike, click the link below and scroll down to see said bike.
