Default Battery Light "surging idle" and Main relay... Help 89 Civ 1.5 EFI

here is the story.. About 3 days ago my battery light started to come on only when idling in drive. well yesterday it would not start it would crank and crank but would not fire. I finnaly figured out it was my Main relay, well by hitting the main relay with a screw driver i got the car started. anyways right away I noticed the battery light again, Also my idle was surgin really bad when hot! i bumped the idle up a bit so that when I was stoped at a light in drive the battery light would not come on. well tonight on the way home from walmart the light came on solid even when not idling.. when I got into the gas it would go away. my dash lights were very dim and radio died. I made it home, when I tried to start the car it acted like the battery was dead. I gave it about 10 mins and it started!! the battery light of course was still on. Anyways im almost sure its my alternator, But can my alternator going out cause the main relay to act up so bad that it wont start? and make my idle so crazy????? If anyone has had this problem I would really apreciate some info!! thanks guys

If you did not have enough power to switch the main relay then I suppose but I think its unlikely.

Test your battery and alternator to make sure where the problem is, also make sure the belt is tight.
