Default exhaust under gas tank??

i've noticed a few guys are running their exhaust system as a straight pipe right under the gas tank and one bend (thus causing an angled exhaust). i was curious how safe is it to run the exhaust right under the fuel tank? most places i go they highly recommend against it.. is it just to save their *** so they won't get sued if some freak accident that has the odds of 1 and 1,000,000 happening? i'm assuming people are saying spontanious combustion can happen if the exhaust is under the fuel tank, but is that really realistic?

if its hung right, i wouldn't be as worried about the tank blowing as i would be about it bottoming out and severely denting my nice new exhaust system.

I don't think an exhaust will ever cause a gas tank to explode

There are two things to worry about, heat and sparks. If you bottom out I could see the exhaust sparking but I don't sparking is an issue at all. I have used an angle grinder, and welded under my car and the sparks never blew me up. There is a ground coating on the gas tank that will prevent this.

As far as heat goes, well the exhaust really does not get to hot back there, I mean it does get hot but nothing to worry about. If Honda gas tanks were that sensitive then there would be a lot more Honda's exploding.

You never know. =P That's true though, I mean the coating under there was made for a purpose. I could see if you were going 150+ miles and u bottomed out and maybe there might be an explosion.

There is a heat shield back there, if someone was really really worried, they could make a scatter shield.

But I mean, imagine how many people have owned a Honda and at one time driven over something hot, hot asphalt, hell even a small fire or fireworks is a good example. It will take a lot for it to exploded. And its the gasoline vapors that will do the damage, so your car would have to be leaking gas or have a hole some where. And then you would have to bottom out. Its not gonna happen.
