Default What Tranny Should i get for my y8

well i have a choice of either buying a tranny from a d16z6 or a tranny from a 99 y8...the tranny on my car is on its way out the door so i wanna do the swap sometime in the next few weeks to a month before my car takes a huge **** on me...so should i go for the newer tranny from the y8 or the tranny from the z6 with lower miles...both trannsmissions are a complete assembly, wires/sensors and all...

EDIT:: my car is a 98 5speed ex 4dr with about 97k miles on it

the z6 tranny is a hydro. i voted for the z6 tranny because i would always take something thats cheaper and has lower miles

^ i think so. I know that the 96-00 d-trannys use steel shifter forks as opposed to 92-95 aluminum forks.

Wow, Y8 trannys are only $225? I should pick myself one up for a auto to manual swap.

well the y8 tranny has 99k miles so its not like its brand new...they are never really that expensive...i remember totalboost i beleive was selling s20lsd trannys for like 300-350 and thats the msot expensive d-series tranny your gonna find...junkyards will get rid of a s40 or s20 for 400-700 bucks cuz they are ********...but good ol' HT is the best marketplace to go for these things

stay with the Y8 transmission. has stronger shift forks.

Z6 uses aluminum shift forks
Y8 uses steel shift forks

what do you have in terms of motor mounts? if your still on stock mounts, that's why you're grinding / popping out of gear. your tranny might be ok still, but it's probably fucked. i'd get some inserts for $20 (better yet fill those mounts up with some window weld for free) before i replaced the entire tranny.

i was in the same situation myself several months ago. i upgraded my mounts, and the third gear grind stopped. but if yours is popping out it might be too far gone. i ended up going with a z6 tranny a few months later, because i found a good deal on one. a clean y8 tranny at a reasonable price is hard to come by.

^^^agreed also. I have owned 3 z6 trannys all broke the shift fork. i replaced the shift fork on one of them and it broke withine 5,000 miles so Y8 all the way.

that doesn't work .. they're two very different designs. if it did everybody would have told you to do that already.

Mine is a Y7 (I do plan on going with Y8 in the future) and I have grinded 2nd gear (going from 1st) on a turn, because I believe the mounts were too soft. Last weekend, I changed the engine mounts to Hasport 88A (extreme race) engine mounts and shifting has been beautiful. Even the common D16 reverse gear grind is gone - meaning shifting into reverse is way easier now because I could never shift it in completely at one shot, it is always 2 or 3 tries.

yep

everyone thinks for some reason that when the gears start grinding it's the syncros. honda syncros are bad ***, but the engine mounts are far from it.
