I have a 97 Accord SE (auto) and the manual says to only use Genuine Honda Automatic Transmission Fluid when replacing (it is rather expensive). Are there any other alternate brands that I could use instead or is it absolutely necessray to use Honda's ATF?

 

stay with honda ATF.. i rather pay a little more the fluid, than having to pay for a another transmission..

B&M Trick Shift Synthetic. I used it for 3 years, no problem.

 

Trust me spend the money and get the genuine stuff.. stuff like that shouldnt be cheaped out at all! Always use HONDA ATF

honda fluid. trick is to find a honda dealer who will do a tranny flush when your tranny gets up there in milage.

 

its a small price to pay to keep from destroying your auto tranny clutch packets.

i dont trust all those other mercron/dextron alternatives

 

I can't speak for Honda, but I know a lot of transmissions require the OEM fluid. Sure something generic may work, but do you really want to risk the longevity of your transmission (something which honda doesn't have the best track record with)?

 

I was thinking that I probably should (and will eventually pay for the genuine Honda stuff)....but, does anyone know exactly how the Honda ATF differs from other manufacturer's brands? I can't really imagine Honda creating some super secret formula mix of ATF that ONLY works in Honda transmissions.....

They have some special additives that lubricate the transmission good. That is all I know.

Believe it! I can't speak for Honda but I know Chrysler certainly does. Like I said they probably will work for a while, but its not worth taking a gamble.

 

because some of the other stuff is made to go into a range of cars as some are mercron(ford) and dextron compliant. honda atf only goes in hondas for a reason.
