Default Detonation and timing advance?

This may sound really stupid but when "retarding" ignition timing using a timing light which side of the red crankpulley mark should you be on?16 degrees advance is on the red so is 14degrees to the right of the mark or the left? Also I have never heard detonation and I was wandering if it is obvious to tell the difference between detonation and valvetrain noise or do they sound very similar?Like if the lost motion assemblies were bad could that be mistaken for detonation?

yes detonation is loud, you should have someone that knows what detonation sounds like...look at your a/f ratio... dont advance more then 18 degrees... good luck

to me it sounds more like a rattle than a ping and usually it gets worse when under a load.

I've had my timing to 20 degrees but couldn't tell if I was pinging, so I chickened out and put it back to 18....
