Passed my JDM engine today(smog).
i got a 94 civic SI I'm smogging to sell. I had put in a SOHC zc engine, same specs as USDM engine. So that wasn't a problem. But my NoX gas was killing me. Max was 57, first i was way over because of an old cat, then had it replaced and i measured a 57 on a max of 57! i was lucky. Everything was triple the avg or something crazy like that. The engine is in good shape, i have just I/H on there so why woul its emissons be so high?

Of course it will barely pass. IT's JDM BRO!!, LMAO
ummmm, zc was a Japanese engine only. Not offered in the states. The only difference between that engine and the USDM equivelent is aa small smog peice on the intake manifold. i swithc manifolds of course. So it being JDM is irrelevent to being able to hardly pass. Yes a CA smog btw.

The high NOX level can come from a lot of different causes:
Here's a list I remember on HT to check in order
1. EGR system (which you don't have)
2. O2 sensor
3. Timing/Spark advance
4. Catalytic Converter
5. Incorrect/faulty thermostat
6. coolant temp sensor may be open
7. MAP sensor
8. MAF sensor (which you don't have)
9. fuel injection system
10. faulty On-board computer
11. computer PROM
12. internal engine repair.

jdm and usdm engines are equal. the only thing different is the smog equipment the usdm engines have on. I've seen jdm engines that have run cleaner then the their usdm counterparts. Since you're from Chicago I highly doubt you know WTF you're talking about

thanks, O2 is new, timing had to be retarded to pass, i don't know about the thermostat or coolant temp, but i'd imagine i'd be overheating if that was the case. The map sensor is good or bad, or no where inbetween i'd imagine. the rest of the stuff i would really only know if i started tearing things apart. But thanks for the help anyhow.

On my old Si with a JDM B16A, I kept failing SMOG until I finally changed the cat'. My nOx level was at 2. The guy that kept testing my car everytime I was there couldn't believe it either.
