for that welder you are looking at 30-40 amps input when welding close to the limit of the machine. You should be looking at a 6 gauge wire to handle that safely. As far as two or three wires, it should be three. For single phase 220 you have one ground and two hots.

i have 8/3 for my Syncro180. i asked the electrician that did the wiring on my house and he said 8/3 would be plenty. i was making an "extension cord" and he said that if i made it 30 feet then 8/3 would be fine. but if i made it about 50 feet then i should go to 6/3 or i might get some drop in current but i probably wouldnt. so i made it 30 feet and got 8/3 and its been great

I went with 6-3. Make sure you get the copper and not the triplex(aluminum), even though if you are wiring it up I'm sure you already know about it.

what size breaker is that on? The idea is that you want to breaker to flip off before the wire gets too hot to catch fire. I know that you are probably ok with 8/3 but I don't want my house/shop burning up over something like 50 dollars difference in wiring.
