It's a Rover engine...
Some Rover's in Europe came with Honda engines. Some had sohc ZC's, some had dohc ZC's.

it's a D16A8 or A9. it's basically a Euro ZC. European Hondas came with the same engine (D16A8/A9), but with the standard ZC-style valve cover. the valve cover on the engine in your pic means it came from a Rover. There are no real differences between the D16A8 and the ZC. The D16A9, however, has lower compression because it didn't have a catalytic converter, and didn't need the extra compression to make the same amount of hp as the D16A8, with a cat.
D16A8 9.5:1 (catalytic converter)
D16A9 9.1:1(no catalytic converter)
came in European Civics and Concertos? from around 88-91, and Rover 216/416 GTI from around 89-96-ish
i have a Rover D16A8 in a Civic wagon, and i have no complaints.
For all intents and purposes, it is a ZC. Same hp, same compression, same everything. well, almost.. there are couple millimeters difference in some of the internal parts, but i can't remember which. seems like the thickness of the rods, maybe. One good thing about a D16A8 from a Rover is that they put them in cars up until 1995/6, which means you may get a slightly newer engine than if you got a ZC. someone on the net stated that their D16A8 (Rover cover) came out of a JDM Isuzu, but there has been no proof that i know of.
oh, and the year should be stamped on the block, above the exhaust manifold.
2 numbers, one on either side of the dipstick, like... 8|9
