Default Importing a Type R

I was bored the other day, and i did a google search, and i came across a few websites that will import Honda's of any shape and size.
I was looking at a few Type R's(DC2 Body style)right hand drive and everything, you know 100% JDM.

And the cost of the car itself was like 8K. I was kind of curious why it's so cheap, my only conclusion i drew from that was, that those cars aren't as big as they are over here in the states.

Also, an importing fee to the states was about 1200.

So, im thinking for about 10K, you could have a legit JDM-R.

Can you guys think of any draw backs to this, besides not being able to see the car.

I originally posted this up on the "Integra" forum, and i was told there was someone on this forum that has done this.

Does anyone know who this person is?

Any input/help would be most appreciated.

read in the new Honda Tuneing, its a lot of hassle, especically if your in cali. if its a "race car" then it wont be that bad, but if you want to put it on the street - better off doing a conversion.

but sereously pick up that mag, lots of good info

Good luck with the inspection/registration. This has been discussed several times before. Do a search and you'll see why there aren't too many JDM ITR's in the US.

FYI: its not difficult to get a VIN issued to the car if you register it as a "show car/race car" (varies in diff states). 2500 miles a year limit. Otherwise you get a nice citation/impound

Oooo, 2500/yr isn't bad. Of course customs will rape you.

It is more difficult to import a JDM ITR than lets say, an older Sir-G or a Civic. The problem with the 96+ integras is that there is no DOT record of the front bumper support (or lack thereof) and also the headlights are not DOT legal.

A Civic or older Integra would not be hard at all. You would need to replace the headlights with the USDM counterpart (DOT legal) and you would just need for the car to clear customs. Paperwork is thick, and you probably wont see the car for up to a year before it clears.

Cost is not a lot, just takes a lot of time and effort. You have to call the right people and get all the paperwork to make it a smooth operaiton.

It is very possible, and if it is truely what you want to do, persue it, otherwise a USDM ITR would probably be a better bet.

If you register it as a race car, it would be exempted from the emission test by the EPA, and without the emission approval, the car would not be able to obtain a VIN. I believe it is a federal requirement, not state specific.

Importing a car as a show car, EPA would allow the car to stay for a limited time before it needs to be exported or destroyed. The car would be exempted from emission test, and by the rule, without EPA approval, no VIN can be obtained.

As long as the car is inside the US border, I'm sure there are loop holes of getting around the rules. But everyone is right, it is a lot of hassle.

talk to your local registration office. they will be able to help you through the process. and please do not IM me asking about how i did it. it is different for every state, so the way i did it, may not work for you.

It is very possible but it is not cheap nor quick!!! That price is about right but $1200 for shipping is not all you will pay. If you want a 98 spec the price goes up quite a bit!

Here is my baby... super rare too

If you want to know how to register it then call your state DMV office! Also Lots of places can get ITRs but you may be sorry with what you get!

I myself went through so much crap to get my car over here. And 4 years ago the prices were higher, but importing and jumping through loopholes was so much easier. I basically got lucky with my car.

Keep in mind that aside from the $1200 shipping, you will need a specialized customs broker that deals with importing automobiles.(I suggest Kuhne-Nagel or Norman-Krieger). You will also incurr various transportation fees such as towing, forklift etc. A fee for a customs entry bond and port entry fee. You will also need to pay the company you buy the car from to next day air you hardcopies of the "OBL"(Original Bill of Lading) and a commercial invoice which will need to show the value of the car and it's origin. Don't forget the duty tax, other brokerage fees. Also, if all your paperwork is not in order before the vessel arrives, and your shipment is not cleared within the short timespan customs allows, then it will go to a bonded wharehouse where you will pay a daily penalty.

If i had the chance to go it again, I wouldn't do it. Especially with todays rules and regulations on importing. I'd either try to buy one used or get a front clip and do a firewall conversion.

That reminds me.

Registering a car for a particular state is about 1/4 the effort to register it federally.

If you plan to sell the car eventually, you would only be able to sell it with a title in the same state it was registered to. Otherwise, you would need to register it federally, which takes A LOT of work.

Good luck
