Thoughts on buying a 98 Superhawk? VTR1000 996
Im looking at getting a 98 Superhawk as my third bike. Any thoughts on reliability, top end, random advice or whatever? The bike has 10.5k on it and is $4500. What ya think?
Great bike. Tons of torque. What are your other two bikes?
Reliability is great. Typically Honda quality. Also, typical Honda when it comes to their CCT and RR. You'll need two CCTs when it comes time to replace - I suggest APE manual CCTs. I just bought an Electrex RR, but supposedly the ones from the VFR will fit.
Top end is not as much of a rush as it is on an i4. Stock, the front end isn't up to hard-riding. Some people have changed the fork springs, and a brave few have fitted a new front end from an RC51, or a Fireblade (900, 929, 954), or even an F3. Some crazy people have put on a single sided swingarm from the VFR.
Fuel range is pitiful on the SHawk. It guzzles gas like no other bike I've ridden, and it has a small tank that's shaped wrong so that half a gallon is unusable. There are expensive fixes out there, but most people just learn to deal with it.
They need a bit more work to be a fast track mount, but they're capable machines.
With all that said, I would not hesitate to buy another SHawk if I ever found a good deal on one. They are fun fun fun bikes with lots of character, and you don't see many of them around.
$4500 is slightly high for the year, but that mileage is relatively low. What condition is the bike in? What add-ons are there?

I have yet to take a look at it in person, but I am going to check it out tomorrow. heres the link to it ... http://adcache.cycletrader.com/5/9/0/79047890.htm
seems to be in pretty decent condition.
my first bike was a Honda CB250 (oh yea!) haha
my second bike was a Suzuki SV650
third ... this one? maybe.
what would you say would be a good price on this bike? also I only weigh 145 lbs so im sure I wont have to worry about the front end not popping up on me... haha. but im not really into wheelies and such. Whats the top end like? and how bad is the gas mileage?

It's an ok price. Not the best I've seen, given the year. You might want to take off the K&N air filter if you buy this bike - it does more harm than good (bike makes less power).
Heli bars make a world of difference.
The front end comes up quick. It's the handling that is spotty, especially under braking. And speaking of braking, you'll want to upgrade those lines if you buy a superhawk.
Top end isn't much of a rush. VTwins generally don't have a big hit of power - it just builds gradually.
As for gas mileage, I average 30-35. On the track is closer to 20.
