going to pull my engine tomorrow...want to know if steering will work without axles

haha good stuff. your axles are your drivetrain. meaning they are inline with putting the power to the pavement.
Steering has to do with the front knuckles, lca, uca, and tie rod/steering rack
Axles attach transaxle to steering knuckle to make the wheels rotate

thanks..didn't know if the axles leveled the wheels in front..thanks again
It will steer fine, but if you don't have the splined end of the axle through the knuckle with the nut on, you run the risk of separating and damaging your wheel bearings. The knuckle has two bearings pressed in and the axle and spindle nut holds everything in compression preventing the bearing from coming apart. I wouldn't roll it far.
