Need help with speedometer!
The deal- 1998 Civic EX. Speedometer is at 0 while car is off. Turn key to "ON" position and speedometer jumps to around 20ish. Start car and sometimes it drops to zero and works regularly, but sometimes it just stays, and then other times it will just fluctuate from 20-22-20 and so on. ALso I might add that sometimes when I'm driving down the road the speedometer will jump from 20 then start working normally, but will proceed to stop either when i turn the car off or on its own while driving still. I don't see how it can be the gauge cluster, and I dont see how it can be the VSS, reason being im not getting a check engine light, and VTEC is engaging normally in the low 5ks.
Anyone got a clue on what the problem could be or have had a similar situation?

Thought so too,.That was the first thing i thought of, until i unplugged the VSS and blew all the dirt out of the connector and the vss. Problem still consisted.
try and swap a vss from a friend's car, the same thing was happening to me and I swapped one from an old engine I had lying around, and it worked no problem.
