Default adj cam gear slipped

recently i was workin on my prelude messin with my adj cam gears? i started the car and after a min the ext. cam gear slipped the full 5 deg. and the engine made a very loud tickin noise. i shut it down very quickly(only ran for a few seconds) scared the **** out me. i seen the gear slipped and reset the gear and the car started fine no noise. could've this damaged the engine at all? it didnt hurt the gear visually. what would be the best overall power setting on the gears to start with for my h23 engine?
