Fitting 12 Tires Inside the Car - Photos
In a recent topic, I noted that I had brought twelve tires inside my ITR, to and from a track event. Ten of them were 205/50-15 and two were 225/50-16; I'm quite sure that you can also fit twelve of the stock 195/55-15 size, which is narrower but has a slightly larger outer diameter than the 205/50-15.
To fit 12 tires inside the R:
2 stacked horizontally at the rear of the hatch, on the left side
4 lined up vertically across the hatch between the shock towers
2 vertically behind the driver's seat in front of the previous 4
2 vertically behind the passenger's seat in the same way
2 vertically on the passenger seat
This does not count the spare tire, which was the 13th tire inside. I don't know whether all of these tires will still fit if you put a full-size tire in the spare tire well; it might, but it might raise the floor of the hatch up enough that those two horizontal tires won't fit.
I had to have the seat ever so slightly forward of where I would have preferred - just a little, not uncomfortably so (but this might be a problem for tall folks - I'm about 5'9"). Also, I had tied a rope between the tie-downs alongside the ends of the rear hatch brace and the wheel/tire directly behind the driver's seat, just in case, since all that weight was directly behind me (but in a frontal collision at any speed, I would hate to think of the chances of survival).
You asked for photos, and here they are. I had put most of the tires in plastic garbage bags, since they were pretty dirty from track use.
First, from the rear. (Those are two tires on the left at the rear; to the right, under a blanket, is a big tub with my track tools, pads, oil, etc inside.)

Now, from the driver's side door. (You can barely see my helmet sitting on top of the tires on the passenger seat. My jack and spare rotors were on the rear seat floor, and my overnight bag and igloo cooler were on the passenger seat floor.)

That's true - probably close to 500 extra pounds. I could feel that the car was accelerating slower than normal. Of course, with all that stuff inside the car, I was trying to accelerate, corner, and (especially
) brake a lot more gently than usual.
