If you are going to gut your cat, don't bother. Spend the money and get an Omni-power test pipe. I have one on my exhaust, and I love it! The pipe brings a new sound a feel to your exhaust, plus the craftsmanship is amazing!

Kteller.com is a great place to order from!

mine was clogged a few years ago so i gutted it with a pry bar and a bfh. i ran it like that so i could pass visual inspection till i made the car a race car and ditched the exhaust. big improvement over the clogged cat, but i'm not sure vs. stock. it was definately lounder, and it did smell bad...

I put a cat on for emissions, and my gas milege went down and so did my power. I took the cat off, looked in it, it did not seem clogged but I gutted it anyways because I knew that was the problem

Gas milege went up, so did my power.

I bought a CarSound (I think that's what it was... I don't remember) cat that works really well. High flow and bolts right up. It cost less than $100.

I just don't like test pipes.

dont gut a good working cat. just get a straight pipe and save the good cat til smog time. if its already clogged or cracked or whatever, then go for it. but dont inhale any of the dust, its got a bunch of nasty stuff you dont want in your lungs.

A lot of people here probably won't care but it rarely gets brought up...social responsibility.

The cat serves a vital function in cleaning up an engines exhaust. But a clogged cat isn't doing its job and will strangle power. If thats the problem. A decent cat only kills 1-2 hp, if any at all.

So what if you make a conscious decision to pollute more so you can make 1-2 hp more? Given that Texas is teetering on the brink of full smog emissions testing, I'd thank you very much not to stink up the atmosphere any further. Just ask our California members what they think of their aggressive smog program.

You should realize that our hobby needs to be tempered by attempt to be as environmentally responsible as possible. It takes a retard not to see a correlation between deteriorating air quality and the **** that comes out of your exhaust. Not only are you hurting yourself, but you're effecting me and my family.

But with a name like Baked Beanz, you probably do more then your own fair share of polluting the air anyway.

I passed AZ state emissions with a gutted cat... with flying colors, untuned rich...

Now my camaro on the other hand, has dual 3" cats... and that pig won't pass emissions worth a ****.

i actually read a post about a year ago that said that a car with a "gutted" cat lost power, as where one with an after market hi flow one gained alittle bit. Plus no horrid smell.

I gutted the cat on my 88 since it had 171,000 plus miles on it. It sounds better, no huge difference in power but there is more, gas mileage is slightly better and there is no smell. If anything a cat will smell since sulphur is a byproduct of the catalyzing process, thats why the exhaust smells like rotten eggs on a car thats been beat on hard or is running rich. I remove all my smog crap on my cras/trucks since most of them are so old that the stuff wasn't working and was hurting performance and mileage, probably making more pollution than if they were removed. If you can afford it get a good large capacity high flowing cat or a stock cat that can be removed easily for race days. Gutting a cat made the biggest difference in the older V8 american cars since they made so much more airflow and the cats were very restrictive back then(pellet type cats). If you have no money and its plugged, gut it and go, saves money that way and also you will get better mileage and power. Make sure you get a good cat though if emissions testing starts where you live.
