Default Confused - Falken Ziex Ze-512

http://www.edgeracing.com
i wanted to buy a set of tires for the 16 slipstreams im getting and i wanted to get a nice light weight tire that'll last long - finally found some at edgeracing.com... they had 205/45/16s that weighed 17.9 pounds.. i kept looking a round and found out they had the same tire in 205/40/16s.. i figured they would weigh less - they weigh a little over 19 pounds.

Can someone explain this to me? doesn't the 1st number mean the width (they're both the same) the 2nd number means the sidewall height (meaning the 205/40/16s have less sidewall) and the 3rd number is the rim diameter... why does the lower profile weigh more?

shorter sidewall needs more reinforcement to handle the same load. Therefore the tire weighs more

205 is width of tire
40 is the height (which is gotten from theratio of the width)
15 diameter of rim

like o man stated, shorter the side walls need more reinforcement

I betcha they are two different speed ratings. Higher the rating the more material needed to hold it all together

205/45R16 87V :: 17.9 lbs

205/40R16 83H :: 19.x lbs

Correct??

Being that I'm a development engineer for Dunlop, I'll give you a very educated guess.

Someone else mentioned that a lower profile tire needs more reinforcement to support the load. It's actually the air in the tire that carries the majority of the load, the fabric and steel reinforcements are designed to help the tire keep it's shape at speed, and to generate cornering forces, not so much to support the load.

The 205/45R16 is a V-rated tire, while the 205/40R16 is H-rated. In order to make the V-rated tire more sporty, you can reduce the gauge of one of the rubber components inside the tire to help increase cornering power. (I doubt there are any tire designers from other boards reading this post...but I'll keep further details to myself just in case ) Another side effect of doing this is by making the tire lighter, it's more likely to pass the DOT test for the V-rating because there is less rubber in it overall, which means less heat, which means less likely to fail.

You wouldn't think that changing something inside of the tire would have an effect on how a tire "handles"...that's what makes tires such a fun engineering problem, they're anything BUT intuitive!!

So to sum it up, the 205/45R15 probably weighs less because they reduced the gauge of a key internal rubber component to help generate more cornering force and make it feel like a sportier tire.

Thanks

Matt
