Default BAH! I went down

God I'm hitting myself over the head right now. After work today, I felt an urge to go ride. So I saddled up and went for what was a pretty nice cruise around town. I was about like 4 miles from my house when I get this bright idea to hit up the local twisties before I go home. It's about like 3 miles of curvy roads. And I was going about 40 through a sweeping left hand turn when I spotted all this gravel and chunks of dirt on the floor. And down she went. I picked the bike up and just shook my head.

The outcome was a bent shifter, rashed middle left fairing, rashed fairing inbetween the middle fairing i don't know what to call it, rashed engine cover, upper got minor rash but I don't ill be replacing it, very minor rash on the left lower fairing. An old couple stopped by and checked if I was alright, I told them I was ok and thanked them for stopping and checking on me . First time going down and I hope the last. Good thing there wasn't any on coming traffic. Be careful when you guys are riding.

I came out with minor rash on my elbow and knee. I was wearing an A*star TZ-1, jeans, smx-plus boots, sp-1 gloves. Jacket looks like I didn't even go down. But theres a big hole in my jeans. Funny thing is I'm not too mad, I'm thinking it's going to be around 300 bucks to fix. I was going to buy a new helmet, but I guess the helmet is on hold for right now. Be safe guys! I'll be back later going to eat with a friend.

First off glad to hear your alright.

Did you hit your head and are there any marks on your helmet? If so you need to replace it.

So what happened with the gravel? Did you hit it and lowside? Try to avoid it? Hit the brakes? Target fixate? I want some more detail here

If your looking to sell any of your rashed up plastic send me a PM because I might be interested

Thanks guys for your guys concern. I basically hit the gravel while I was leaning and low sided. The whole time in my mind I was like just ride it out and hope for the best. Helmet is fine, I didn't hit my head. I think I'm pretty lucky nothing serious happened, and also once I get some new plastics I'll sell you the rashed ones reborn. Which will probably be the mid left and the piece between the mid left fairing. And an engine cover if you want that too . I'm out for the night.

In a situation like that, could you have straightened the bike until you were past the gravel?

If you hit ur helmet hard enough, it may damage the integrity of the helmet...which is bad if ur ever in a serious accident

Glad to hear that you are ok man! This may be a stupid question though, but if a cop was in the area, would you get a ticket for recklace riding or anything in that nature?

The force of your helmet falling just as little as four feet is enough to damage the structural integrity of it and cause a need for replacement. So basically any accident you would be in where you helmet touched the ground, would be grounds for replacement.

Idiots with helmet replacement. If your hit your head semi lightly and rash it up...its fine. If you land on ur head or something, then replace it. My friend looped his bike landed on the chin section of his helmet and took a chunk out of it. Happened again and yet helmet still intact. Final time he went down...still ok. All three times helmet took the brunt of it, so they are alot stronger then you may have heard.

That's true. I've seen it happen too. But I wouldn't risk my own head to prove that theory. Generally and theoritically speaking, an impact to the helmet can cause hairline fractures which can result in premature failure when you need it. Doesn't mean it will and definitely doesn't mean it won't. But it's not worth the risk. Anyone disagree?

Again everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I'll take the words of Helmet Mfg. and MSF Instructors over your friend. Thank you.

With regards to the helmet's condition - you can have the manufacturer check it out. Shoei does this service for free (although you have to pay shipping to them, but they ship it back to ya free). I believe Arai also does this.

You got my vote on that one. The poster clearly doesn't understand the physics of helmets and how they work. Of course you can crash multiple times with the same helmet and not get hurt. The problem is that when the polystyrene in the helmet compresses to slow your head at a lower rate it doesn't recover. If you want to go down with less than maximum protection that's your choice, but it's not a choice in my book.

At the risk of sounding like my parents, just because your friend didn't get hurt when he jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge doesn't mean that you won't either.

I have always heard that if you drop your helmet you should replace it. even if it falls off your pegs or something really low to the ground. i also think of the helmet as through away one scratch and its done, i would not risk a hairline crack being the death of me.
